Termly Home Learning Task - Term 4: God and Mortals

This term in Year 5 our topic is Gods and Mortals. The children will be deepening their understanding of ancient Greece and will begin to think about the impact of this civilisation on our modern-day society. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in, or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your children create something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.

We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.

English:

In English this week we wrote a setting description and a character description. To give us inspiration for our setting description, we made dioramas of the jungle and used them to generate vivid vocabulary. Our focus for the writing was to use a variety of sentence openers including, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions. We also wrote a fabulous description of Razvani, the Fire-Fiend, using figurative language. Every one was packed full of similes, metaphors, alliteration and personification. Some even had a go at using oxymorons.

Next week we will be writing diary entries to explore Lila’s journey.

Maths:

This week in maths we finished our unit on fractions and percentages and completed our end of unit quiz. We solved problems involving finding percentages of amounts using fraction and percentage equivalents. We also started our unit on position and direction by looking at translations.

Next week we will delve further into transformations, introducing coordinates in our descriptions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we looked at Greek inventions during our afternoon sessions. We also planned our DT projects, which include using a cam mechanism to create movement. Today, we began to make our cam systems using dowel, card, hack saws and glue guns.

Next week we will complete our DT projects and evaluate their outcomes.

Today we supported Comic Relief by dressing in red to toe. The children took part in a danceathon to celebrate the day. Thank you for all your generous donations.
