One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News: 28.03.24

As we reach the end of the final week of term, we have, once again, lots to celebrate in the life of Year 6!

Thematic

This week, our young minds have been delving deeper into the intricacies of life in Thanet and surrounding areas during WW2, specifically, the harrowing and inspiring events of Operation Dynamo.  Children have spent time exploring the role of the ports as well as the significance of Dover Castle in housing a military hospital. Building upon their recent visit to the historic Ramsgate Tunnels, the children were primed to explore the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience that characterised this remarkable chapter of World War II.

RE

This week in their RE studies, our Year 6’s have been finding out about the significance of churches and the role they play and the impact they have, in supporting the local community. Children have spent time exploring how Christians use different parts of the church and likewise, how the Bible is used in a church.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been learning about ratio. Children have been solving problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities, and likewise, have been learning to solve problems involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found.

English

As our journey through ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ draws to a close, the children, this week, have been considering the experiences of individuals, who were forced to flee their homes in the midst of war. Through their reading, they have encountered the struggles, fears, and hopes of refugees during World War II. Armed with newfound knowledge and empathy, our children have taken on a remarkable challenge: to step into the shoes of a refugee in giving a voice to their experiences. In role as a character from the text, children have been written speeches, honing their persuasive skills, using emotive language to convey the pain, longing, and resilience of refugees.

Thank you!

As we bid farewell to another term, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our families for your unwavering support of the school and your children’s education. Thank you also to all the parents who attended the Parent Teacher Consultations this week; it was a joy to see the enthusiasm and positivity towards the children’s learning and education, from both children and adults, alike. Discussing the incredible progress and growth that children have made across the year, really has been a highlight for the year 6 team!

To all our children and families, we extend our warmest wishes for a restful and relaxing Easter break. Whatever your plans are, we hope that you enjoy spending time doing the things that bring you happiness! We look forward to welcoming children back, on Monday 15th April.
