One Childhood - One Chance

Vital Water Safety Message

Have fun and stay safe at the seaside – that is the clear and simple message for children at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs.

In a pre-summer talk representatives from the RNLI said that while Thanet has miles of award-winning safe beaches, it is important to understand simple safety rules.

Pupils discussed the meaning of the different advisory and warning flags displayed at the seaside, about the role of the RNLI and beach lifeguards, and learned about the various types of safety equipment used.

Head of School Darci Arthur said: “We are so lucky to have so many lovely beaches close to where we live, so it is very important to communicate the possible dangers as well and ensure that the children are aware of ways to stay safe.”

Teacher Isobel Reed is Upton’s Personal Development Leader. She said: “The RNLI visit links in with of PSHE curriculum theme of health safety.

“After the talk the children were able to explain what the RNLI do and identify the flags and signs that appear on the coast and beaches.

“Our school prioritises teaching pupils about making sensible and safe choices. This talk was an interactive and engaging experience for the children to learn about this.”

Upton has also organised more upcoming visits that will develop the children's learning about safety in their local community. This includes a fire safety for the whole school and rail safety for Year 5.

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Ramsgate Arts Primary and Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate.
