One Childhood - One Chance

Upton are Thanet Rugby Champs

Upton Juniors in Broadstairs are helping pioneer rugby in primary schools across the area.

The school are currently celebrating winning the recent Thanet Passport Rugby League tournament held at Minster School.

Young players from Years 3 and 4 competed including teams representing these schools –  Garlinge, Holy Trinity, Newlands, Minster, St Joseph’s, Upton and St Gregory’s.

Teams played in two groups, with the winners of each advancing to a final. All matches were tight affairs. In the final Upton defeated St Joseph’s by a single score to take the trophy.

All players received medals and the event helped raise the profile of the sport in the area.

Upton Sports Coach Callum Noble said: “Throughout the tournament, all seven of our team displayed great enthusiasm, determination, sportsmanship and resilience. “

Head of School Darci Arthur praised the school’s success which she said demonstrates the Upton spirit. She explained: “It was a terrific event – our team showed great character on and off the pitch and it was lovely to hear how well our players conducted themselves.

“A winning mentality is important – and so is fair play and recognition of your opponents’ achievements as well.

“Rugby is growing in popularity in primary schools and we have always been keen to support and pioneer developing sports practices.”

Thanet Passport: The Thanet Primary Association for School Sport, or ‘Thanet Passport’ as it is more popularly known, is neither a charity nor a business, but is run by schools for schools. It helps organise and supports all primary school sports festivals and competitions across the district.

Its aim is to get as many Thanet children participating in sport as possible, regardless of ability, thereby promoting a lifelong interest and commitment to sport and a healthy lifestyle. Fair play and teamwork are encouraged at all times, as well as the development of skills. Winners of many of its events go on to represent Thanet at county finals with great success.
