One Childhood - One Chance

18.10.24 Year 3 Weekly News!

Another fantastic week in Year 3!

Upton in the News: Firing pupils’ imaginations at Upton – The Isle Of Thanet News

Thematic

This week in class, we continued our exciting exploration of Skara Brae, diving deeper into its mysteries and marvels. One of the highlights from the past two weeks, has been making scale models of Skara Brae. With great attention to detail, we recreated the iconic stone buildings, carefully placing the hearths, beds, and shelves as archaeologists discovered them. This hands-on project allowed children to understand the layout and purpose of the village structures in a new and exciting way. The process was meticulous, requiring patience and creativity, but the results were incredible. Each model became a miniature window into the past, showcasing our knowledge of Skara Brae’s design.

Next week, we will be coming to the end of our Thematic learning and will be taking the time to reflect on all we’ve learnt. We will be discussing our highlights from the term, as well as testing our memories of what we’ve learnt and remembered. Next week, we will also be moving onto our RE studies, where we will be studying Judaism, finding out about the Ten Commandments.

English

This week in Year 3, English lessons took a lively and thought-provoking turn as we delved into the world of the Stone Age! Our focus was a debate on a big question: Who had the most important job during the Stone Age – the men or the women? This led to some great discussions, with everyone eager to present their arguments. We began the week by learning more about the different roles that men and women had in Stone Age communities. After exploring these different responsibilities, we split into teams to argue each side of the debate. Was it the men who risked their lives to bring back meat for their families, or the women who ensured the home ran smoothly and everyone was cared for? To prepare for the debate, we worked on using persuasive language to strengthen our arguments. We discussed key techniques such as using strong facts, appealing to emotions, and presenting clear reasoning. We learnt how to construct a strong opening statement and how to respond to opposing arguments, making sure our points were both clear and convincing. It was fantastic to see how passionately everyone got involved, using their persuasive language to present well-thought-out arguments on both sides of the debate.

This week in English, we had a truly unforgettable experience! Mr. Noble took our learning to the next level by demonstrating how to light a fire in the Stone Age, following the instructions we wrote last week. Using our instructions, Mr. Noble showed us exactly how to build and light a small fire. It was amazing to see the process in action, from arranging the wood to seeing the flames flicker to life. As the fire grew, we all watched eagerly, knowing that our hard work played a role in making it happen. It was a fantastic opportunity to see our written work come to life and to enjoy a little treat in the process—toasting marshmallows!

Looking ahead to next week, we will be writing a recount from another character’s perspective. This will be a chance to step into the shoes of ‘Om’ in order to describe life from her point of view.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have continued to sharp our skills using addition and subtraction by exploring efficient strategies that make calculations quicker and easier. The focus has been on using near doubles and adding on to find differences, two key methods that help us solve problems with greater confidence. Beyond practising these strategies, we’ve spent time applying them to real-world problems and engaging in problem-solving activities. This has given us the opportunity to see how these methods can be used in different contexts, whether we’re working out change for a purchase or calculating the total score in a game. It’s been rewarding to see how much more efficient and confident everyone is becoming with their maths skills!

Next week, we will be diving into our next exciting topic: place value!

A huge thank you to all the parents who joined us for Year 3’s Book Look this week! It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible learning and progress the children have made throughout the term. Seeing everyone engaged in celebrating the hard work of the children made it a truly special event. We are so grateful for your support and involvement in your child’s learning journey. Your presence at the Book Look shows just how important this partnership is between home and school. The children were thrilled to have you here to share their successes, and your encouragement means so much to them.

We look forward to seeing parents on Monday 21st October and Tuesday 22nd October for our Parent Teacher Meetings!
