One Childhood - One Chance

Year 5 Weekly News - 1st of July 2022

What a week in Y5 this week!!

English

This week in English, we have continued the reading of our book “Street child” and dived into the depths of poverty in Victorian England. This week we focused on the outside and then the inside of the workhouse, relating to our five senses and interesting vocabulary - a truly terrible place to be. It is a roller-coaster of emotions with Jim finding glimpses of hope and then being dashed and doomed to a little life of poverty. Next week, do things get better for Jim? Do we meet the next character? Is this character going to be nice or treat Jim badly?

Maths

This week in maths, we've been looking at symmetry, translations and reflections. Some of us even managed to work on symmetry using diagonal lines.

UBBC

In Y5 we've continued to learn about the Maya, complete Upton's Got Talent auditions and prepare ourselves for the summer fair. In computing this week, we managed to complete our own letter figure, add a background and have fun with our stick-figure animations.

Home learning information.

For home learning this week, we would like you to create a piece of artwork linked to the mathematics we've been doing this week - it could include symmetry, translations or even a kaleidoscopic effect….

If you wish to complete this on a computer instead of drawing …. Try this link... https://eschersket.ch/ - Under the “Symmetries” on the left-hand menu,  change to “rosette” and make the number to 1 to make a simple symmetrical picture… or “Tinker” with these options to change what happens.

You can download the image using the menu buttons at the bottom of the page.

Here are 2 examples from members of 5Y    :)
