This week we learnt all about the peppered moth and natural selection. This linked to our learning on Charles Darwin last term. We found out that it had to evolve due to the Industrial Revolution! Survival of the fittest meant that the darker moths were surviving whilst the white ones were eaten be predators because they were no longer able to camouflage against the birch trees. This was because the birch trees became covered in soot from the factories.

6B then used what they had found out to produce wonderfully creative pieces!

They made the most of the sunshine and the beautiful nature. We went exploring outside, to find a variety of flowers. They took their time, thought about light and shade and sketched some wonderful flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe. Then once we returned to the classroom, they used different mediums to add colour and texture to their flowers. The flowers look wonderful, well done 6R!

Upton Junior School Celebrates World Book Day!

Lockdown hasn’t dulled Upton’s enthusiasm for celebrating World Book Day, in fact it is quite the opposite with children both at school and at home getting involved in 6B. We started the day by playing a game of who’s behind the book. Every teacher in the school had disguised themselves behind a book and the children had to guess who was who. The children really enjoyed this and it was a great way to start the day!

The children spent the day looking at the book After the Fall by Dan Santat, which is the story of how Humpty Dumpty got back again! The book linked beautifully to the school values of Resilience and Aspiration as well as other key themes of courage and perseverance. Using the book, the children undertook a number of reading and writing activities in the morning and in the afternoon, they focussed on PSHE and thinking outside the box!

Resilience and aspiration were such key themes that the afternoon activities asked them to do just this. The children were asked to pick a challenging activity which would test their resolve including:

Choice of activities so we get lots of different ones:

Designing a paper airplane that looks like a flying animal – just like the book!

Engineering a device to help Humpty get up the wall!

Designing and creating a protective outfit for Humpty just in case he was to fall again!

Researching their favourite bird and creating a piece of artwork that reflects its uniqueness!

Cooking or baking something that they have never made before but it must contain eggs in some way to create an eggsellent dish!

The results were brilliant and the pictures sent in from both home and school were fantastic! As well as this the children were given some extra activities to take part in at home in over the week including:

Decorating and egg and turning it into a book character.

An extreme reading challenge to find somewhere fun and unique to read. Even the teachers got involved with this one with one teacher reading on the moon!

Read to your sibling or pet.

And finally, the Egg Drop Challenge! Where the children had to create a contraption that would protect an egg if it fell!

The children were also encouraged to wear colourful, bright clothes for the day reflecting the brightness of reading and all the joy reading brings to our lives!

The work 6B produced was of the highest standard and was so impressive and unique!

This week in topic, we have been looking at the life and work of Charles Darwin. Darwin's work on evolution, natural selection and the Origin of the Species is one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time and it's foundations still impact the way in which we look at the living things within our world today. Over the week, the children created work all about him and undertook their own observational drawings to show what was in their environment.

We dressed in our brightest colours to get us in a celebratory mood:

We enjoyed reading After the Fall - the story of what happened to Humpty Dumpty after he was put back together. We created alternative book covers:

We also wrote our own stories inspired by Humpty Dumpty's perseverance and courage in overcoming his fear or heights and falling. Here are some amazing ones:

The unforeseen circumstances of the last year have dramatically changed all of our experiences of the world around us and our immediate environment has become much more important to us than ever before. I want you to think of a place that has meant a lot to you during this lockdown and create a piece of artwork based on it in any medium you wish.

You could base your artwork on your desk where you work, your kitchen where you have sat playing board games with your family, the view of your friends through a video call, your favourite exercise route, your garden, the view out of a window, wherever feels important to you. Media could be paint, a sketch using pencils, digital media, a 3D model, whatever takes your fancy.

Take a photo of your artwork and send it to your teacher, we look forward to seeing them!

We have enjoyed imagining what it would be like to give up our houses, jobs and school to go on a year long epic sailing voyage around the world.

We have been considering different ways of opening stories and have written our own alternative openings in different styles. Here are some great examples:

Description

I’m woken up by the family of chirpy birds singing outside my window. The sun is hot and bright and it hurts my eyes but the smell of bacon has me up and running down the stairs is milliseconds. Stellas wet nose sniffs at the letterbox as the postmans weery finger pokes todays post through our letterbox. I pull stella away from the pile of letters and scoop them all up. One in particular sticks out like a sore thumb. My mum and dads names are scribbled roughly across a brown and sad looking envilope. Curious and confused I open it up then gasp. The Brickworks is closing?

Joshua

It was a bright and sunny day as Michael stared out of his bedroom window on the second floor of his house. The garden ahead bloomed with colour: white daisies; custard sunflowers; and red roses all shone proudly in the morning sky. The concrete path leading from the front door seemed to glow. Everything with right in the world just the way it was.........and then thunder struck.

Like a snake, sneaking up on its prey, the letter that ruined it all danced its way innocently enough to the house in the hands of the postman. It was as if time had frozen...the Brickworks was closing! Mum and Dad had no jobs anymore.

Aurora

Dialogue

Slowly Michael’s mom opened the envelope, she took out the piece of paper that was inside it she didn’t know that one piece of paper was going to change her whole life. Then that was when it hit her. She started crying, tears coming out of her eyes like a waterfall. Michael ran out of the kitchen and saw her mom sitting on the stairs, hands buried in her hands clutching a piece of paper.

“Mum, what’s wrong?” asked Michael as he tried to calm her down, which was hard as she was crying uncontrollably.

“Oh, I am so sorry Michael!” Michael looked at her with a confused face.

“What do you mean that your sorry?” just then Michael’s dad came rushing out of the kitchen.

Zoe

As the letter slipped through the door, Stella rushed like a cheetah.

“Michael, grab the letter from Stella before she rips it apart!” shouted his mum from the kitchen table. Michael frantically ran to the door to see Stella sitting with the letter in her mouth.

“Give me that letter Stella!” exclaimed Michael forcing the chewed letter from her mouth. Michael trudged along to the kitchen and placed the once white, wet letter on the wooden table.

“Thank you, now eat your breakfast before it goes stone cold.” suggested Michael’s dad from the stove. Michael sat down getting a delicious whiff of bacon and sausages from his plate. A while later – once they finished eating their brunch- Michael's mum took the soggy letter and started to open it. After reading the letter, his mums eyes had no shine or happiness in them.

“Well, what did it say then?” questioned Michael's dad.

“We...” mumbled his mum.

“Spit it out mum we haven't got all day!” yelled Michael from the garden.

“We have been made redundant...” cried his mum. The house fell silent.

After looking at the uses of important objects, such as the pulpit and lectern, we focussed on stained glass windows and the stories of Jesus that they tell. The children were then tasked with making their own stained glass windows thinking of a symbol that represented them and those close to them. The results were fantastic.

Next time you go out for exercise (or from your garden if you are lucky enough to have one), collect some natural objects – obviously without damaging nature – and create a piece of art work celebrating the beauty of nature. You could collect pebbles, leaves, sticks: the list is endless. You can then create the artwork outside, or in your home. Take a photo and email it to your teacher. Here are some examples:

In the lesson, we found out about her life and how she was inspired by the simplicity of nature often focussing on flowers, animal bones, landscapes and the sky. Her artwork is simple yet detailed and makes you feel happy and one with nature.

We discussed how she often painted off centre flowers and created smooth textures with colour. 6R did an excellent job at using Georgia's technique to create their own master pieces. Please click on the amazing piece below, they are so wonderful and have really made me smile!

In PSHE, we spoke about the importance of hope and optimism! We discussed the importance of looking on the bright side and how being optimistic means we can be positive which in turn makes us feel less stressed. We also discussed the importance of being grateful for what we have and showing gratitude to those around us. From this the children chose to create a treasure map with all the things that they are grateful which leads them to the most amazing treasure or a gratitude and happiness picture which displayed all the things they are grateful for in their lives.

Most importantly, we decided to remember that yes we will have days where things get tough but we have to remember what we have and pull through to the sunshine! Things can always get better!

Chapter 12 really took us on a journey, both physically through Zoe's desperate and brave escape, but also emotionally from the fear of her entrapment, to the horror of battle, to the relief of being free from Eels Island and the never-ending hope that she might find her parents.

Due 10.2.21

We have looked at how animals have adapted and extinct animals. But your task is to create a completely new animal species that can survive in at least one biome! You need to think about how it has adapted to survive and as an extra challenge can it survive in more than one biome? Can it survive in all of them? (Think Fantastic Beasts)

You could:

Draw a label your animal.

Create a model of your new species.

Create a PowerPoint!

Upload your work or send it to us via email! We can’t wait to see what you create!
