Artists and Designers are among the most creative humans on the planet, and we believe that everyone has an element of the artist inside them somewhere. At Upton, both Art and DT are incredibly popular with pupils, who take pride in their creations and the development of their skills.

Taught as part of our broad and balanced curriculum, pupils’ artwork is inspired by their topic area and thus cross curricular links are planned to enrich learning in other subject areas. Pupils’ work is constantly displayed across the school, changing termly as a new topic inspires new artwork.

Art Intent:

At Upton we aim for pupils to become more proficient across a range of art techniques through producing creative ideas, recording their experiences and analysing their results. Sketch books, in particular, are essential tools during the planning stage for ideas and visual aids.

Alongside the development of skills and technique, we teach pupils art appreciation. Pupils learn about great artists, architects and designers in history and develop their understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms.  Regular ‘Artist of the Month’ assemblies are followed by Art competitions involving creation of similar art by pupils, an immensely popular project that many families enjoy working on together.

Design Technology Intent:

At Upon we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products within a variety of contexts.  We follow the National Curriculum but link our DT learning to overarching topics and sequence learning with these to ensure that children can see how products are useful and can use their own learning around them wherever possible.

We want DT to be rigorous, and have a build up of key skills across the Key Stage with ambitious outcomes. We follow the National Curriculum, with all lessons involving Design, Make and Evaluate. In addition, each year pupils engage with Cooking and Nutrition within their topics.
