English:

This week, we completed our instructions for our amazing fireworks. We then read some more of the book and discussed how Hamlet, the white elephant, was being mistreated. We wrote a letter to Chulak to persuade him to start treating Hamlet with the respect that he deserves. We used strong, emotional language to persuade Chulak.

Next week we will create a diorama of a jungle and then write a setting description describing the journey down the river through the jungle.

Maths:

This week in maths, we started our fractions unit. We learnt about equivalent fractions and then used multiplication and division to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and then mixed numbers into improper fractions.

Next week, we will continue with our unit on fractions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we have been doing geography in the afternoon. We started the week by discussing what we already know about China (we knew quite a bit already as we are lucky enough to learn Mandarin as our Modern Foreign Language). We then located China on a map and created our own maps of China locating the capital city, megacities and key landmarks. We then learnt about the daily life of a typical Chinese child and compared it to our own. We created a comic strip to show this.

We finished the week with Remembrance Day. We spent the whole day completing activities to commemorate remembrance day. First we started the day by reading the poem 'In Flanders Field'. We discussed the history of remembrance day and how this helps us to understand the poem. We then wrote a story linked to the poem, imagining that we were in the poppy fields picking poppy's and each poppy transported us to a memory from one of the soldiers that died in the field. We were amazed by the emotional and create pieces of writing that came from this! We then completed some remembrance day themed maths by budgeting for soldiers uniform. We finished the day by learning about the local history surrounding remembrance day and creating a beautiful piece of artwork.

Next week, we will continue to do geography and learn about The Great Wall of China and The Three Gorges Dam. We will also start to do some History and learn about trade in China.
