Termly Home Learning Task - Term 4: God and Mortals

This term in Year 5 our topic is Gods and Mortals. The children will be deepening their understanding of ancient Greece and will begin to think about the impact of this civilisation on our modern-day society. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in, or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your children create something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.

Here is Lawson's fabulous Olympic torch...

English:

In English this week we wrote a persuasive letter to Chulak to ensure that he ceases using Hamlet (the talking elephant) as a walking billboard. The children used a range of cohesive devices to link ideas within and across paragraphs. We also wrote a letter (as Lila) using emotive language, to her father, Lalchand. The purpose was to express emotions through 'show not tell' and to elaborate on the reasons why she no longer considers Lalchand to be her father.

Next week we will be writing a setting description of the jungle and a character description of Razvani, the Fire-Fiend.

This week we also celebrated World Book Day. Have a look at our wonderful costumes linked to vocabulary.

Maths:

This week in maths we looked at converting between fractions and percentages, and how this links to decimal numbers. We understood that percentage means out of one hundred.

Next week we will be finishing our fraction and percentage unit by solving problems involving these.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we continued studying Ancient Greece by focusing on literature and architecture. We looked at the epic poems of the Iliad and the Odyssey and acted out the journey of Odysseus, who returned home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Next, we looked at the life and legacy of Alexander the Great and ended the week by looking at some great architectural achievements: the Parthenon and the theatre of Dionysus.

Next week we will be turning our hands to DT to create a version of a great Greek invention.
