Termly Home Learning Task - Term 5: Tides of Change

This term in Year 5 we will be exploring our new topic, Tides of Change. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be delving into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.

English:

In English this week we wrote a description of the workhouses and separated it into paragraphs about the inside and the outside. We used our senses to build a variety of descriptions, which included expanded noun phrases and figurative language. Our focus for the writing was to use ISPACE openers, remembering the comma to separate the clauses. We are about half-way through the book now and we are all wondering what is in store for Jim next.

Next week we will be continuing Street Child and will be writing numerous diary entries to show the changing situations that Jim finds himself in.

Maths:

This week in maths we finished our unit on converting measurements, including completing our end of unit assessment, and have recapped the place value within decimal numbers. We applied our understanding of multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 to multiply decimal numbers.

Next week we will continue calculating with decimal numbers by answering addition and subtraction word problems.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we continued to look at the geography of Broadstairs and Ramsgate by studying the coastline and seeing how it has changed over time. We used a variety of maps to look at the land-use of Broadstairs and drew a sketch map of the local area, including a key. We ended the week by making our predictions for the future of Thanet with regard to wind farms, coastal erosion and sea defences.

Next week we will turn our hand to history and explore Ramsgate’s role in Operation Dynamo.

Fire, Fire...

Today (Friday), we welcomed a fire-fighter into school to lead an assembly on fire safety. The children were taught how to raise the alarm in the event of a fire and how to keep as safe as possible. The children found the assembly very engaging and informative, giving many potentially life-saving tips. If you have any questions about the content of the assembly, please contact your child's class teacher or our PD lead, Miss Reed.
