One Childhood - One Chance

Homework - 23/10/2020

Science at home - do you have the solution?

This homework is due on on 6th November - so you have half term and the first week back to work on it.

This week, we would like you to complete a small science experiment at home and report your findings.

For this homework, all you will need is:

  • a cup
  • a spoon
  • water (this is your solvent)
  • salt or sugar (your solute)

Your science experiment will be split into 3 stages:

Stage 1 - Making a solution

Add a spoonful of your solute (salt or sugar) to a cup of water and stir well. What do you observe happen? Record your observations in your book. You can use drawings (or photographs) to help record your observations.

Stage 2 - Finding the saturation point

For this stage, we would like you to investigate the saturation point of your solute - how much sugar/salt you can add before it will no longer dissolve in your solution. To do this, add one spoonful at a time and stir well in between spoonfuls. Record what you observe after each spoonful. How many spoonfuls of your solute can you add before no more will dissolve into the solution?  Again, you may wish to use drawings, diagrams, photographs or a graph to record your results.

Stage 3 - can you get the solute back out of the solution?

To separate the solute from the solvent, you will need to use evaporation. Pour your sugar/salt solution in a shallow bowl and leave out in the sun (by a window). Observe what happens over time (be aware - this stage may take a few days). What do you observe happen?  Record your observations in your book.

Have fun with this science at home! We can't wait to see your work!
