Discovering Anglo Saxon Life
A hands-on fun way to explore different areas of Anglo-Saxon life has been enjoyed by children at Upton Juniors in Broadstaiirs.
The Year 5 group focussed on a variety of aspects of how the ancient civilisation lived including diet and food, craftsmanship and jewellery.
Further activities in a special Wow Day to celebrate and consolidate the term’s learning topic included making honey shortbread, performing a drama to act out the story of the Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain, and creating clay jewellery such as pendants and brooches.
Across the term, pupils have learnt about settlements, Christianity, kings and kingdoms, the Sutton Hoo burial, the warrior and monarch Beowulf, illuminated letters and runes.
They also researched where the settlers came from and their studies linked in with their English text Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman.
Head of Year 5 Nikki Lewis said: “The children had a fabulous day taking part in hands-on activities to consolidate their learning of the Anglo-Saxons. It was a pleasure to watch children working collaboratively and they all thoroughly enjoyed the day.”
Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Thematic learning encompasses a range of subjects and this topic gave our children a broad range of opportunities to really dig deep into the past and find out about how the Anglo Saxons shaped the future of this country.”
*Anglo Saxon is a term traditionally used to describe the people who, from the 5th-century CE to the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, inhabited and ruled territories that are today part of England and Wales.
