One Childhood - One Chance

Upton’s Walk on the Word Side

Enthusiastic readers took a walk on the word side at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

It was all part of a series of vocabulary parades held as part of their World Book Day activities where pupils from all groups took part in a novel way of enhancing their literacy learning.

The children were invited to pick a word and then wear an outfit that reflected that word. They also had the word written on them with the meaning.

Throughout the day, pupils then took part in vocabulary parades and shared their words with others.

Other activities included a special World Book Day assembly, art and drama, and shared reading with someone from another year group.

Assistant Head of School Gemma Scarr said: “This year we celebrated World Book Day by focusing on reading and pleasure and vocabulary.

“It was such a wonderful event and the children excelled themselves with their word choices.

“The vocabulary parades were a delight with so many colourful costumes - the excitement around the school was fantastic. It was also lovely to hear all the conversations the children were having about reading for pleasure and to share in their enthusiasm across the day.”

Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Literacy and reading for pleasure and information are cornerstones of our children’s learning journey at Upton. This year’s World Book Day celebrations were among the best we have held, and the vocabulary parades really caught the imagination of everyone who took part and who enjoyed watching them.”
