School Timetable: A Day In The Life Of Upton Junior School...
7:30 Upton Breakfast Club: Is available for parents who work and need to leave their children early, we offer a daily breakfast club where children relish the opportunity to meet up with friends before the school day starts. Children are given a healthy breakfast and have the opportunity to select from a wide range of activities before they begin school.
8:30 onwards: The school day begins: The Head of School, members of the Leadership and Wellbeing Teams are on the gates (rain or shine) to welcome every child in to school at the start of the school. Classroom doors are opened and children are welcomed in to their classrooms ready to start their learning for the day.
8:30 Registration: We expect a high level of attendance and good time-keeping from our children. By being on time all our children are able to mentally prepare for the day through our positive and welcoming registration process.
8:55 Assembly: This offers an opportunity for the whole school to meet. We end our week with a celebration assembly – where we congratulate our children for achievements made inside and outside school.
9:15 Maths: Maths is taught in smaller classes to ensure learning is pitched at the appropriate level for each child in the group.
10:15 Break: There are ample activities to occupy the children – including a quiet area for children wishing to play board games or read.
11:30 English:The children’s English lessons are also taught in smaller groups. We follow a ‘Text-Based English curriculum’ allowing children to develop their reading and writing, grammar and comprehension through a structured English programme focused upon developing a love of literature.
12.00 Maths Meeting: The children have the opportunity to rehearse and readdress key concepts enabling the information to stay in their long-term memory.
12.15 Lunchtime: Our Lunchtime staff ensure supervised games are available for all as well as a host of activities for children to participate in with friends. Lunchtime Clubs are also available for those who wish to join eg Speed Stacking Club, Skipping, Art Poetry or Chess Club. Our Upton Library and Computer Suite are open every lunchtime, with Year 6 monitors taking positions of responsibility to ensure all children enjoy a happy and productive lunchtime.
1.00 Afternoon lessons: The afternoon timetable allows for a more ‘creative’ approach to learning. The children are taught in their ‘House Colour Class’ and will participate across the week in sport and PE (including swimming in our very own 25m pool) as well as attending music lessons with our specialist music teacher (every child learns a different instrument each year they are with us). IT is incorporated into lessons throughout the school alongside discreet IT sessions in our computer suite. RE, History, Geography, Mandarin, Art and Design Technology are also taught across each term with trips out, visitors in and practical hands-on experiential learning at the heart of bring learning to life for the children of Upton.
3.00 The compulsory school day finishes: Parents meet their children from the classroom door. For those children that have permission to leave school unaccompanied, the 'Upton Green Pass' ensures all staff are aware of home collection arrangement. The Head of School and members of the leadership team are on the school gates to enable parents to converse about the day and celebrate their child’s successes.
3.00 - 4.00/4.15 Extra-Curricular Activities: Children are invited to attend a host of after school clubs to enrich their learning and enjoyment. Children can choose from a wide selection, including, football, netball, IT, art, cookery, choir, drama, street dance, gymnastics, basketball, tennis and homework club to name but a few!
3:00 – 6:00 'Wrap-around' Care. The Extended School Day: Upton Ship After-School Club: Parents are able to access daily ‘wrap around care’ for their child if they need to – with the school open from 7:30am until 6:00pm. Children attending after-school club enjoy a varied timetable of activities – ranging from the more energetic sports and games, to time on the laptops and i-pads; playing traditional board games, completing homework or relaxing with a book or watching a film. Children are provided with a light tea and benefit from spending time with other children within the school.
