One Childhood - One Chance

Swimming

All of our Upton children in every year group swim as part of their regular PE lessons in our onsite pool. This equates to roughly 60 weeks of swimming for pupils across their 4 years with us and allows us to accelerate their learning against the aims of the national curriculum. We believe swimming is not just important for health and fitness but is an essential life skill for children living on the coast. At Upton children learn not only how to swim but how how to perform safe self-rescue and how to progress within a range of strokes.

Upton have a strong tradition of valuing and engaging with school swimming. The school campaigned and raised funds to save the pool from closure and are currently in our 17th consecutive year as District Swim Champions, with our swimming and biathlon teams regularly reaching  national  finals.

The aims of our swimming lessons are:

  • To ensure all Upton pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres by the time they leave the school

  • Use a range of strokes effectively

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Swim Data

This data is collected at the end of Y6 when all children have completed their swimming provision at Upton. This data is therefore from July 2022. We have seen a small dip in children reaching these milestones linked to Covid closure and lack of swimming. However, having our own pool has ensured we can quickly catch up.

How many of your current Year 6 cohort swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres?

 88%

How many of your current Year 6 cohort use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]?

85%

How many of your current Year 6 cohort perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations?

90%

Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. Have you used it in this way?

Yes: we use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to run 'Top Up Swimming' for any child in danger of not reaching the goals above. We also using the funding to provide G&T training for our swim and biathlon teams to ensure even the most able children are challenged in swimming
