One Childhood - One Chance

20.06.25 Year 3 Weekly News

Wow, what a week!

Thematic

This week in Thematic, our young scientists have been diving deep into the fascinating world of plants! We’ve been exploring their features, understanding their functionality, and asking big questions like: What do plants need to grow and thrive?

To find the answers, we’ve been busy conducting a long-term investigation. We set up an experiment to observe plant growth under different conditions—light, water, temperature, and more. Children made predictions and prepared their table to record their measurements and observations, which they will undertake over the coming weeks. Through hands-on learning, children have discovered just how much plants rely on their environment, and how each element plays a vital role in their survival.

Next week, we’ll take our learning a step further as we begin to explore the incredible ecosystems of rainforest and will be tackling some of the real-world issues rainforests face, with a particular focus on deforestation. Children will learn what deforestation is, why it’s happening, and the impact it has on plants, animals, and people.

English

This week in English, our Year 3’s have been stepping into the trotters of a very special character: Wilbur, the lovable pig from Charlotte’s Web. Through his eyes, we've been exploring the art of recount writing, using letters to retell key events from the story in a personal and heartfelt way.

Writing from Wilbur’s perspective has allowed children to dive deeply into his experiences, imagining how he must have felt during different parts of the narrative. We've focused on using emotive language to bring Wilbur’s thoughts and feelings to life, whether it's his excitement at making a new friend, his fear of an uncertain future, or his gratitude for Charlotte’s kindness.

Next week, we will be moving onto writing our very own short story about an animal escape!

Maths

This week in Maths, our learners have been busy becoming money problem-solvers! We’ve been working on real-life problems involving money, with a focus on using efficient strategies to calculate change and make smart decisions when buying items. Children have been applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction to everyday situations, for example: working out how much change they should get after a purchase, or comparing different ways to pay for items. We’ve also been encouraging children to explain their thinking and choose methods that work best for them.

Next week, we’ll be moving on to a brand-new area of Maths, with a focus on mathematical thinking. Children will be challenged to look for patterns, make predictions, and explain their reasoning across a range of contexts. It’s all about developing those deeper thinking skills that help mathematicians solve problems in flexible and creative ways.

Home Learning

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish.

Spellings

To support children with their spellings, we would like children to practise ‘Level 2- PRESSURE PROUT Bundle’

To access it on a laptop, PC, Mac or Chromebook (therefore IWBs):
1. Type in the browser itself where you normally type www (not a search engine)...app.sirlinkalot.org (with no Ws before it)
2. Click on 'More' (top right)
3. Click on 'Sign in'
4. The children will then need to type in their access code

Times Tables Rock Stars

  • Tasks to be completed online.

  • Children’s logins are stuck in their Reading journal.

Mathletics

  • Mathletics tasks will be set from Friday to Friday.

  • Tasks will always follow the learning that week.

  • Children’s logins are stuck into their Reading journal.

Reminder to ensure:

  • Children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes.

  • Children are bringing in their water bottles.

  • Children to bring in healthy snacks for breaktimes.

  • 3R and 3Y will have their swimming sessions on Mondays. Children will need to come dressed in their PE kit to school on this day, and bring with them their swimming costumes to change into.
