One Childhood - One Chance

27.06.25 Year 3 Weekly News

Another busy week in Year 3!

Thematic

This week in Thematic, our children have immersed themselves in the topic of deforestation. Through discussion, research, and reflection, the children have been developing a deep understanding of the causes, consequences, and possible solutions surrounding this important environmental issue.

As part of their learning journey, the children have taken on the exciting challenge of turning their knowledge into a documentary. Over the past few days, they've been gathering facts, writing scripts, and planning scenes in preparation for filming. We are so impressed with their curiosity, creativity, and commitment to sharing what they've learned in such a powerful and purposeful way.

We can't wait to see their documentaries take shape in the coming weeks — and we’re even more excited to see the impact of their voices as they speak up for the future of our planet.

Looking ahead, we're thrilled to announce that next Wednesday is our WOW Day! This special day will be packed with creative activities designed to bring the topic to life. Attached below is a reminder of the letter that was sent out last term. Don’t forget to send your children in with a jar!

English

In English this week, our classrooms have been buzzing with imagination as the children began planning their own narratives based on an animal escape from the zoo! From mischievous monkeys to daring elephants, the ideas have been as wild and wonderful as the animals themselves.

To support their storytelling, the children used a story mountain to carefully map out the key parts of their narratives — from the introduction and build-up, to the exciting climax, resolution, and ending. They’ve also spent time developing their main characters, thinking deeply about personality, motivation, and what makes their animal unique. We’ve been so impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity on display, and it's clear that some brilliant stories are about to take shape.

Next week, the children will begin writing their full stories — and we can’t wait to read all about their thrilling zoo escapes and the adventures that follow!

Maths

This week in Maths, our focus has been on solving multiplication and division word problems and the children have been doing a fantastic job! They've been using bar models to help break down and visualise the problems, developing a clearer understanding of the relationships between numbers and operations.

It’s been brilliant to see their confidence grow as they tackled a range of real-life scenarios using these models. Not only have they been sharpening their calculation skills, but they’ve also been improving their reasoning and explanation of mathematical thinking.

Next week, we’ll be moving on to an exciting new topic: calculation strategies and place value. We’re looking forward to building on the children’s number knowledge as they explore different ways to solve problems efficiently and deepen their understanding of how numbers work.

Home Learning

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish.

Spellings

To support children with their spellings, we would like children to practise ‘Level 2- PRESSURE PROUT Bundle’

To access it on a laptop, PC, Mac or Chromebook (therefore IWBs):
1. Type in the browser itself where you normally type www (not a search engine)...app.sirlinkalot.org (with no Ws before it)
2. Click on 'More' (top right)
3. Click on 'Sign in'
4. The children will then need to type in their access code
