Term 4: Innovation Station
This term in Year 4 we are learning about the ancient inventions of the Islamic world and how we still use some of the products today. We will be learning about the Silk Road and how trade played a crucial role in the innovation of new ideas. We will also be exploring electricity, including circuits and how different materials can be classified as insulators or conductors. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term and we look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.
English:
In English this week we read some more of our class text. We wrote in role as Edward to complete diary entries about the ‘Rosie-Affair’ and the ‘Vacuum-Cleaner Incident’. Our focus for writing this week was to use subordinate clauses.
On Thursday, we enjoyed celebrating World Book Day. We dressed either in celebration clothing or as our favourite book characters. Have a look at some of our wonderful costumes and work we produced.
Next week we will be writing a mini, suspense narrative linked to an event in the text.
Maths:
This week in maths we concluded our time unit by learning how to convert time units of measure and answering word problems. We also completed our end-of-unit quiz.
Next week we will begin our new unit – decimals.
Thematic Curriculum:
We began our new topic during our afternoon lessons this week – Innovation Station. We looked at the origins of the Early Islamic civilisation and how Baghdad became the world hub of knowledge and learning. We explored what the Silk Road was and how trade became so important along this route. We looked at many of the inventions that came from trading, most of which we still use today. We also did our own bit of trading and used the ingredients to make our own perfumes.
Next week we will continue to explore why the Early Islamic civilisation was so important to the world.
Speaker Competition:
Congratulations to Freya, William, Imogen and Saksham, who are going through to the next round of the Speaker competition. They will be performing their speeches next Thursday afternoon as they go up against the winners from Year 3. Well done to everyone who has taken part in the competition so far. It was a very difficult job selecting the 4 winners as the standard was so high.
