Term 5: Water World

This term in Year 4 we are learning about water, including how rivers are formed and the water cycle. We will be learning about the role evaporation and condensation play in the water cycle and about the locations of rivers in the UK and around the world. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term. We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.

English:

In English this week we read our new text: Song of the Dolphin Boy. The children are gripped by the story of Finn, a part-selkie boy who struggles with friendships and fitting in but has discovered he has a hidden story and power. He is able to swim like a dolphin and has helped to save the dolphins from balloons that are polluting the sea. We wrote a 5-stanza poem about the sea and started to write an entwined character and setting description. To prepare for the description, we used water colour to link colour and emotions and added key vocabulary to our representations.

Next week we will continue with the story and will finish our entwined character and setting description.

Maths:

This week in maths we explored perimeter and area. We used squares to help us calculate each and used the formulae to calculate them in a different way.

Next week we will complete our unit on area and perimeter and will complete our end-of-unit quiz.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we began our new Thematic topic: Water World. We started the week by looking at the features of a river and made our own representations in trays. For the rest of the week, we explored the water cycle. We learnt the key vocabulary associated with the water cycle, such as evaporation, condensation and precipitation and transferred our learning into making dioramas.

Next week we will be looking at different rivers around the UK and the world.
