Term 5: Water World
This term in Year 4 we are learning about water, including how rivers are formed and the water cycle. We will be learning about the role evaporation and condensation play in the water cycle and about the locations of rivers in the UK and around the world. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term. We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.
English:
In English this week we continued to read ‘Song of the Dolphin Boy’ and finished our entwined setting and character description of Finn transforming in the water for the first time. Then, we created our own mythical creature based on Scottish folk tales. This is in preparation for writing our own folk tale next week.
Next week we will continue with the story and will write a folk tale narrative.
Maths:
This week in maths, we concluded our area and perimeter unit. We continued to find the area of rectangles using metres and investigated the relationship between the area and perimeter of a shape. We drew rectangles using metre sticks on the playground to represent different areas.
Next week we will begin our measure and money problems unit.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week we continued to learn about rivers. We mapped the rivers of the UK on a map and located different rivers from around the world. In groups, we created a poster of a river in the UK and presented our findings to the class.
Next week we will investigate why people live near rivers and will compare the temperature and rainfall of different countries.
Gymnast Visitor:
We were very privileged to welcome Sam Mostowfi to Upton on Thursday. He ran a short circuit training session with every member of the school and then led an assembly about his life as a gymnast. He shared with us what inspired him into a gymnastics career and what the hard-work and dedication has provided and given back to him. He won a bronze medal at the British Championships last year and will represent GB at the Commonwealth Games next year. His goal is to compete for his country at the LA Olympics in 2028. We look forward to following his journey.
