Term 5: Water World

This term in Year 4 we are learning about water, including how rivers are formed and the water cycle. We will be learning about the role evaporation and condensation play in the water cycle and about the locations of rivers in the UK and around the world. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

English:

In English this week we wrote our folk tale narrative based on a character who transforms into a mythical creature when they enter the water. Our stories began with a description of the location and then the characters spotted an environmental problem that needed to be solved. This needed to link to plastic pollution. However, during the middle of the story, the characters overcame the problem with the help of the special powers. The children used descriptive language and experimented with different story openers, including dialogue, action and description.

Next week we will be writing a persuasive letter to help stop the opening of a new large supermarket.

Maths:

This week in maths we have been converting between measurements. These included using mm, cm, m and km for length, l and ml for capacity and g and kg for mass. We solved problems using these conversions and ordered the amounts from smallest to greatest.

Next week we will continue to solve problems involving measurements and money.

Thematic Curriculum:

During our afternoon lessons this week, we explored the reasons why people choose to live near rivers. These ranged from employment reasons, leisure reasons and health reasons. We created a double-page spread and included the rivers where the examples can be found. On Friday, we compared the availability of water in the UK to Kenya. It was shocking to see how different the two countries are.

Next week we will conclude our topic with some science by looking at solids, liquids and gases.
