Term 6: My Home, Your Home
This term in Year 4 we are learning about Broadstairs. We will be learning about the history of the town and what makes it a great place to live and visit. We will also be looking at the classification of animals and how the environment can change and pose dangers. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.
English:
This week in English we continued to read The Boy at the Back of the class and the children wrote some descriptive pieces. First, they wrote in depth about lion eyes and used figurative language in their description. Next, they wrote a description of Josie incorporating ‘show not tell’ to give details about her character. Finally, the children could choose to either write a description of Michael or Tom. They used expanded noun phrases as well as figurative language and ‘show not tell’.
Next week we will be writing descriptions of pomegranates!
Maths:
In maths this week, we concluded our shape and symmetry unit by discovering the properties of quadrilaterals and triangles. We looked at the different types of triangles and explored what made them unique before completing our post-unit quiz.
Next week we will be starting our position and direction unit by looking at coordinates.
Thematic Curriculum:
We began our Term 6 Thematic topic, My Home, Your Home, this week and kicked it off by celebrating what we love about Broadstairs. Then, we practised using grid references by finding clues (OS symbols) around the school by following a map and grid references. We had to work out what the symbol meant and used specific letters in the words to spell out the code word: Broadstairs. Finally, we ended the week with our fieldwork town trail around Broadstairs. We looked at the footfall of different businesses around the town and noted the different types of business on offer as well as looking out for different examples of human and physical geography.
Next week we will look at Broadstairs past and present and will compare the UK to Italy through our Wow Day on Friday.
