9.5.25 Year 5 Weekly News

Term 5 Week 3

English

This week, the children have continued to read their class text, ‘Street Child.’ On Tuesday, they drew the workhouse from the description in the text. After gathering vocabulary, they wrote a setting description focusing on sentence openers. The children wrote about the devastating circumstances that the Victorian children endured. Next week, the children will be writing a series of diary entries focusing on two events in the text. They will be continuing the class text and learning about the story of Jim.

Maths

This week, the children have completed their unit on converting measurements. Following consolidation and a post-unit quiz, the children started their new unit: decimals. Next week, the children will be adding and subtracting decimal numbers and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

Thematic

This week, the children have learnt about Ramsgate during the Victorian times. This connects to our class text and life for Victorian children. On Wednesday, they learnt about Operation Dynamo. They created a storyboard to retell the events and then write from the perspective of a British soldier. This connected greatly to our visit to the Spitfire Museum. Next week, the children will be carrying out a range of science experiments linking to friction and forces.
