Termly Home Learning Task - Term 2: Walk Like an Egyptian

This term in Year 4 we are exploring the Ancient Egyptians - how they lived and significant events and figures from the time. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

English:

In English this week we finished our book: Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx. Everyone enjoyed making links throughout the book and admiring the beautifully detailed illustrations. Our focus this week was on using paragraphs and we used the acronym TiP ToP to help us remember when to use a new paragraph. TiP ToP stands for Time, Place, Topic, Person. We started writing our journals as Marcy to detail her adventures to rescue her father.

Next week we will complete our journals and begin our new text.

Maths:

This week in maths we began our unit on discrete and continuous data. The first type of graph we looked at was a pictogram. We answered questions about a given pictogram and used a tally chart and frequency table to construct our own.

Next week we will continue with our unit on discrete and continuous data by looking at, and constructing, bar charts.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we continued exploring the world of Ancient Egypt. We learnt about the process of mummification and used the same techniques to mummify a tomato. On Wednesday, our focus was on different sources – primary and secondary – including how important the Rosetta Stone was to historians in decoding the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic alphabet.

On Friday, we took part in our Wow Day. We came dressed up in costumes of people linked to Egypt, both in the past and in modern day. Some children chose to dress as cats, as these were sacred to the Ancient Egyptians. Throughout the day, we made some jewellery, drew ourselves as Egyptians using their scaling technique, made a clay cartouche, made Top Trump cards linked to the Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses and took part in a drama workshop linked to Neben-Karru’s tomb. Mrs Watling led the drama workshop, and the children were captivated by the story and enjoyed handling the replica artefacts. The children (and adults) had a fabulous day.

Next week we will be exploring Ancient Egyptian architecture and will look to place important events on a timeline.

A HUGE thank you to all of you who helped to put the children's costumes together. They all looked AMAZING!
