Term 4: Innovation Station
This term in Year 4 we are learning about the ancient inventions of the Islamic world and how we still use some of the products today. We will be learning about the Silk Road and how trade played a crucial role in the innovation of new ideas. We will also be exploring electricity, including circuits and how different materials can be classified as insulators or conductors. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.
English:
In English this week we wrote a retelling of a chapter of our book ‘The Marvellous Journey of Edward Tulane’. This is where Edward is grabbed by a couple of unkind boys, thrown around the ship and ends up overboard. He sinks to the bottom of the ocean where he is then caught in a fisherman’s net and is re-homed by Nellie and Lawrence. The children were tasked with creating tension and suspense through language choice and varying the length of sentences. We also had a focus on using fronted adverbials with a comma.
Next week we will be writing a letter from Edward.
Maths:
This week in maths we began our new unit of decimals. We started the week by looking at decimals as fraction equivalents and how we could use Dienes to represent them. Our focus was using tenths only and made comparisons between them. We finished the week by rounding numbers with one decimal place to the nearest whole number.
Next week we will continue to work with decimals and will be introducing hundredths.
Thematic Curriculum:
During our afternoon sessions, we continued our learning of the Islamic civilisation. We delved into the House of Wisdom and how inventions from the past helped to shape the inventions we use today. We learnt about the story of the rise of the Islamic civilisation and answered our Big Question: Who Changed the World?
Wednesday was Science Day in honour of British Science Week. The day was filled with different science activities and the children had fun exploring with dissolving and which materials are waterproof. It was great to see the children hands-on and engaging with science – hopefully we have some future scientists in our midst.
Next week we will continue with our topic: Innovation Station, but will turn our attention to electricity and circuits.
