We have had a great first week in Year 5. The children have settled incredibly well back into the Upton way and have enjoyed getting to know their new teachers, and vice versa.
English
We started this term, as always, with a non-fiction focus, exploring North America and some of its countries. The children worked in groups to research a North American country and then created a presentation to deliver to the class. We had a real focus on oracy and speaking clearly and confidently.
Next week, we will begin reading our text, There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom. We will be writing non-fiction information texts using the information we learnt this week.
Maths
This term started with place value and focusing on reasoning about place value. The children used number lines to estimate where a number might be and also compared 5-digit numbers.
Next week, we will move on to rounding and adjusting and using a variety of methods to add and subtract.
Thematic Curriculum
This week had a Personal Development focus as we explored responsible communication online and the British Values.
Next week, we will begin our topic, Across the Pond, which will focus on North America.
Homework
- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
- Most children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
