One Childhood - One Chance

6B - Setting Descriptions - Floodland - The Cathedral

After reading about the Cathedral in Floodland and Eel's Island, the children drew their own images of what was described in the book based on what they had visualised. Then, they wrote their own setting descriptions. Some of these can be found below.

Floating on the dark distance, the dull and derelict cathedral was surrounded by gloomy clouds. The sky appeared haunted by the suffering below. Crumbling to the ground, masonry littered the ground as wind danced through the voids where stained-glass windows once sat.

Pinned to the ground, an old cannon was barely visible underneath the years of moss and vines. It pointed the way to a well-trodden path where cobbles gave way to the crisp dry grass that still fought for its life and grew in the crevices of the cobble path. Surrounding the Cathedral was tall gates that when you walked through them you would me the smell the damp from all the wet furniture and bricks from all the countless rainy days and you could see the state of the building as you walk up to it and hear the squelching of the mud beneath your feet.

As dark as soot the clouds roamed the sky like ghosts in a haunted house with the rain heavily pouring and the grass coming back to life but still the miserable Cathedral barley stood all broken and tattered fighting for existence.

Bordering the Cathedral, was the ocean it was almost like it was a prison and the only way to it was by a bridge....

Peeking from around the corner, Zoe caught a glimpse of a cathedral, crumbling and decaying down to the floor. This once glorious sight turned, overtime, into this hellish, infernal ruin. Naked trees danced to the wind’s music, swaying from side to side. Ivory clouds produced pellets of water that shot down on the scene below. Remnants of the stained-glass window illuminated the inside walls.

As Zoe edged closer and closer to the door, she could see the ghastly sight within. Scraps of people lay in groups, huddling for warmth. Darkness consumed her as she strode into the ruin. Chunks of the wall was starting to crumble, showing dull colours from within. There was an alter on a platform where the priest would have stood; but parts were missing because of the lack of fire wood - this was not as Zoe expected…

Iris

The cathedral was ruined. No, it was destroyed, like a bunch of people threw rocks at it and didn’t stop until it wasn’t there. I couldn’t tell if anything was brick or just some dusty, old pebbles. Windows were more broken than this island, actually now that I think of it, the whole building was sad and old, those words don’t fit with it so I have to say it was depressing and ancient like the people on the island. I thought cathedrals were supposed to be all happy and joyful but this one looks like Satan himself took it over for it to be his own. Not just the cathedral looks sad but the whole place around it does, the sky looks as if it was about to burst into tears and the ocean was damp, I don’t even think its blue anymore more like black.

I hadn’t even gone inside and it already smelt like a fire was in there. Could they be burning something like food or sacrificing somebody? I guess I will find out soon. This cathedral is way worse is the one at Norwich and well, that was very bad. Now that I think of it, was it always like this? Because it couldn’t have been made like this, it could have, wait no. It must have been better than it is now! I cannot believe this; they don’t look after anything. This cathedral is more ancient than the dinosaurs! Messier than a swamp! And as unclean as my dress! Well, my dress is way cleaner but it is still extremely dirty! I need to confront them to make this cleaner and healthier.

The cathedral walls were caving in and they are the dirtiest things you could ever see. From a distance it used to be a uniform grey but up close it was a mosaic of humble rocks, which nobody thought it would be like this in a million years. It was disgusting you would never think it would ever come to a disaster just like this. The cathedral towered into the broken cold windy sky, that looked over Zoe with fear, as the sky was a puddle of gloom that hid away from the wind.

Stain glass windows were covered in black darkness and growling in the battered weather. This is the weirdest black you’ve ever seen, it looked like black spider webs were dangling down the sky just enough to see venomous spiders hanging down and giving you a big old fright. The sea was blasting up with humongous waves that soared though the air with a hurricane of thunder that scared Zoe to death.

Underneath the Misty clouds stands a rather sad derelict building for trapped sorrows.

It is so wrecked and ruined that it looks like its been through many wars. The windows are shattered, some boarded with old wooden panels of wood with rusty crooked old nails. Looks like a whole bomb has just blown up and with the vast sea rising and rising, it takes more and more of the Broken Building with it.

The broken windows with Fixed up with bent and rusty bars and the

Tall turrets of buildings crumble. They have been fixed many times throughout the years with the hard weather. The strong winds and rain constantly Bash them and bash them all the year rounds.

It smells of of rotten fish wafting around the emptiness even though people stay here but Aren't very healthy because of the cold and no food. The building is full of damp and mould and looks like it will full down any time, the Sea buries it and buries it slowly Throughout the years. It's incredible that it still stands a landmark with its tall Still turrets stand high until the rest of the building.

James

From far and beyond you can see the large decaying building without any rumble or tumbling bricks falling to their doom from ever such a great height. You see a large building for all its glory. You see 8 picturesque turrets with cracked stain glass windows and a large oak steel door with no hinges missing and stood in the middle high above the large steel metal doors is a magnificent stain glass window that has small glass cracks harder to see from out on the horrific ocean see.

From near and close you can see this horrific sight in all its glory with tumbling bricks falling every second and small parts of rumble coming down with it. From the floor you can see where small bricks have broken on their fall. You can see large oak doors on the edge of their hinges and hinges coming off by the second. You can also see the half of a broken stain glass window and turrets falling off by the minute. You can see the once beautiful large old stain glass window

The cathedral was a bitter cold place. The stone tiles were placed on top of each other very carefully, but now its stone tiles where crumbled and fallen off from the tides and the waves. Before the disaster began it was a holy place of hope and glory that protected you from any bad memories and spirits but now it is the place of scavengers and peasants that claimed this once beloved cathedral. The cathedral is now a monstrous pile of stone slates.

The cold was a knife on your cheek slowly slicing of your flesh. The clouds were a puddle of darkness, scattered on the once beloved planet but now is a flooded piece of inferno. The cathedral was a dark life-less morsel left from the ancient. The cathedral was standing on its last high heel slowly withering away from the depths of the submissive sea. Darkness surrounded the once beloved cathedral of hope. Corpses of trees stuck out of the once land but now nothing but water and sea.
