Home Learning:

Over the next 2 weeks, we would like you to research and create your own Viking shield. This can be as big (sensible) as you wish. The shields would often be decorated according to your tribe or house so make sure your design represents you in some way.

You can use a variety of materials – cardboard, wood, metal, fabric… and you can go all out if you wish. In the past we have had children making metre-wide shields from wood and metal, making them very realistic. Viking shields were typically circular.

How about getting the family involved and creating it as a family project? The possibilities are endless.

Please bring in your shields two weeks today – Friday 27th January 2023. We look forward to seeing all your fabulous designs.

English:

In English this week we have delved deeper into our book: ‘Viking Boy’. It is a thrilling read and has kept us gripped, wanting to read on. The chapters we have read have been quite sad, with Gunnar losing his Father, but we are intrigued about the objects flying towards them…

We started the week writing a character description of Gunnar, the main character, and then wrote a setting description of a Viking settlement. Our focus was on using ambitious vocabulary and figurative language.

We can’t wait to continue the book next week, where we will be focusing on weaving action, description and dialogue together.

Maths:

This week in maths we focused on long multiplication. We started by calculating two 2-digit numbers using the area model and the column method and finished the week doing 4-digit numbers multiplied by 2-digit numbers. It was a challenge, with many steps to follow, but we did it!

Next week, we will begin our learning of short division.

Thematic Curriculum:

In our afternoon lessons this week we have looked at who the Anglo-Saxons were and why they invaded Britain. We learnt that the tribes (Jutes, Angles and Saxons) came from Denmark and Germany and settled in Britain for the better land and weather.

Next week, we will continue to look at Anglo-Saxons and how Britain was split up into the seven kingdoms.
