Safety on the Trains

This week Year 5 took a trip to Margate railway station to learn about being safe on the railway. The children engaged in a variety of activities and learned a lot from the guides we met whilst they were there. After taking a fun quiz about some railway information, the children explored the station with their guide to identify key areas, as well as identifying and discussing potential hazards on a model railway!

English:

In English this week we concluded our text ‘Street Child’. The children were fully immersed in the story and were sad that it ended! We created newspaper reports based on the establishment of the Barnardos charity, which the book is based on.

For the first week of next term we will be reading a series of non-fiction texts about space, linking to the start of our new topic in the thematic curriculum. Using this information, the children will create their own information texts.

Maths:

This week in maths we completed our statistics unit by learning about time tables. We then reviewed our KIRFs and consolidated our arithmetic skills.

Next term we will be starting our learning of shape by exploring degrees and angles.

Thematic Curriculum:

During our thematic curriculum this week the children concluded their learning about the Maya. They created and delivered a series of presentations to explore daily life in the Maya and explored a variety of theories about the mass abandonment of Mayan cities. Their oracy skills have shone this week through delivering these presentations in small groups! The children also completed their end of unit assessment to round-off our topic.

Next term we will be starting our new topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond’, which will be a space-based topic!
