Termly Home Learning Task - Term 3: Marvels of Matter

This term in Year 5 we will be exploring our new topic, Marvels of Matter. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be exploring the history of Anglo-Saxon Britain whilst also exploring states of matter in science. We would like the children to delve further into their history learning during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make - the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your child creates something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.

We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.

English:

In English this week we explored the question: ‘Why have so many people invaded Britain?' Using the research, we wrote an expert report to outline the reasons including, more suitable weather for agriculture, a wealth of natural resources for weaponry and house building, and the want of more land for power. This has given us a good background for our upcoming book and afternoon topic: Anglo-Saxons.

Next week we will be introducing our new text for the term as well as exploring different ways to open a story.

Maths:

This week in maths we began our new unit on area and perimeter. We had hands-on learning using Cuisenaire rods and explored area using centimetre squared paper.

Next week we will be continuing to explore area and perimeter and will begin our work on fractions and decimals, which will span a large proportion of the term.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week the children have explored kindness during our PSHE lessons. They have discussed the idea of dares and how to solve conflict through compromise. During our e-Safety session, the children learnt the importance of following age restriction guidance and knowing what steps they could take to stay safe when communicating with others on social apps.

Next week we will begin our thematic topic: Marvels of Matter. This centres around Anglo-Saxon life and our lessons next week will be exploring how they lived and what their villages were like.
