Termly Home Learning Task - Term 3: Marvels of Matter

This term in Year 5, we will be exploring our new topic, Marvels of Matter. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be exploring the history of Anglo-Saxon Britain whilst also exploring states of matter in science. We would like the children to delve further into their history learning during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make - the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your child creates something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.

We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.

English:

In English this week we read some more chapters of ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’ and new characters have been introduced, which is taking the storyline in a different direction. We completed our setting description of the farm where Magnus and Harold live, and wrote a description of one of the main characters in the story. Our focus was to use expanded noun phrases and figurative language throughout. During our PaG sessions, we used a word origin dictionary to find the meanings of words and which language they originated from.

Next week we will be writing a recount of the ambush scene from our text. We will be focusing on weaving description, action and dialogue throughout.

Maths:

This week in maths we delved deeper into fractions and used a range of manipulatives to represent them. We placed fractions on a number line using our knowledge of equivalence and finished the week by converting fractions to tenths and hundredths. We ensured we converted the given fractions to either tenths or hundredths so that we could easily convert them to decimals using a place value chart.

Next week we will continue with decimals, introducing thousandths, and comparing them to fractions. We will also look at ordering decimals and investigate improper fractions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we continued our fascinating work around the Anglo-Saxons. The focus for this week was on the heptarchy (the 7 Anglo-Saxon kingdoms), the different kings and the conversion from paganism to Christianity. We learnt about the importance of Canterbury in the story of the conversion to Christianity and why they chose Christianity over Pagan worship. We constructed timelines to show the story of Anglo-Saxon Christianity and wrote speeches that began: ‘If I were an Anglo-Saxon king/ Lady…’.

Next week we will research the importance of Sutton Hoo and will look at Anglo-Saxon food and jewellery.
