Key Messages: For next term…

• Monday is PE for all of Year 5. Please send the children in wearing their PE kit.
• Thursday is swimming for 5B and 5G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why.
• Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
• Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
• Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.

Termly Home Learning Task - Term 5: Tides of Change

This term in Year 5 we will be exploring our new topic, Tides of Change. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be delving into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

 We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.

English:

In English this week we started to read our termly text: Street Child, which is set in Victorian Britain. So far, we have learnt that Jim, the protagonist, has been evicted from his accommodation with his mum and two sisters, and that his mum is not long for this world. We wrote a character description of Mr Spink, the evil landlord, who turfed Jim and his family out. We used expanded noun phrases and ambitious vocabulary. We also had a big focus on improving presentation and editing and improving our work.

Next week we will be continuing our text and will write a letter as Ma, as well as a description of the workhouse.

Maths:

This week in maths we continued converting between measurements and introduced the concept of imperial units of measure. We learnt that there are 1600m in a mile and 1kg equals 2.2 pound. We used our estimating skills by discussing the approximate weights of items in the classroom and checked them using weighing scales to see how close we were.

Next week we will finish our unit on converting units of measure and will begin exploring calculating with decimals.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we began our new theme: Tides of Change, which involves a local area study of Broadstairs and Ramsgate. We started by looking at the history of Broadstairs and Ramsgate, placing key events on a timeline. Then, we looked at the painting ‘Ramsgate Sands’ by William Powell Frith, which portrayed seaside life during the Victorian period. We learnt that the railway was a key aspect of travel to the seaside and there were many posters produced to advertise the coastline. We ended the week by creating our own posters to advertise travelling to the beach at Ramsgate or Broadstairs, using a range of media (pastels, watercolours, felt pens and pencils).

   

  

Next week we will continue looking at the geography of Broadstairs and Ramsgate and how the shape of the coastline has changed over time.

Italian Students

This week, 20 children were superb buddies to 10 Italian students that visited the school for the week. All of the children were respectful and responsible, and really enjoyed the role they had been given. Some even build good friendships with them. Well done to everyone who was involved.
