This week we imagined that we were Dooby and that we had just arrived on the island.

We wrote a  persuasive speech in role as Dooby to persuade the islanders that we should now lead them in order to protect them and to save them from possible invasions and dangers that could threaten them.

We looked at persuasive openers and speech writing techniques to make our writing have an impact on the reader.

Here are some great sections from our letters:

With my determination to get things done, bravery, and loyalty I strongly believe that if you select me as your leader, for a long time you won’t even know the meaning of danger, for you need a role model to guide you around this Island and I know that I am the person for the job! It is imperative that you choose me as your leader for your own good, and health! 

I strongly believe that I could be the captain of this ship, steering us towards the treasure and success and away from danger. With me as your leader you shall be treated with a numerous amount of respect, and loyalty, because you all, my friends, deserve the best, which is why I think that I would be best for the role, of playing your faithful leader.  

 

Confidence, pride, striving to be the great leader of eels island. That is not something anybody could just get up and do. I will fight for our lives and protect every soul on the island with stride and determination. It is imperative that you choose me, as I, I could be the one to end hunger, stop fights and bring out the true selves of every eel alive. 

If I end up leader of this place, I will stop hunger and make sure everybody gets food without arguing over it, or even feeling the temptation to snatch something off of the plate next to you.  I will send men out every day to catch any bird or fish on sight, so we have enough food for a decent meal every day. I will set curfews to prevent theft, so you can go to sleep knowing your share of food for tomorrow is safe. I will hire a right and left hand to back me up whenever I may not be able to do the job myself, I can assure you they will guard you with their lives. Any other tribes that form and try to steal the island we call home will never stop us when I'm leader. So I urge you, all of you, so pick me. 

When im here, I will keep everybody safe. From other tribes, strangers, or members on this island trying to overthrow me or disobey me. Curfew will be at a very sharp time, anybody out of bed past this time for any reason will get punished, this will keep you safe during the night so you never have to worry if you have had an argument or a disagreement that day. Any other tribes will be killed on sight to prevent theft and murder, plus any strangers will be deeply interrogated to make sure they are not from another tribe. 

Glory, resilience, toughness, that will be our tribe when im here. I am an expert at fighting and know many techniques that may be useful on any evil that overlooks our island. Also, I am not afraid to use these, if its for the better of our tribe, I would like nothing more. Everybody will be happy, fed and strong, we will rise up above the other tribes and my legacy shall be remembered. I will keep trouble under control, and give you freedom as well as limits. I assure you we will be a strong, brave community. 

Wouldn’t you like to live a life better than the one your living now? Then stand up to show that me as a leader would be the best option for our wellbeing and health, as well our our toughness, we will show them what I great leader I am, and I will make your lives better than they ever were here. 

Dooby 

I, as have you all, am devasted at the state of our boat but that doesn’t give us an excuse to sit around feeling sad for yourself. We have a whole island to ourselves so let's look at the silver lining. Each day we lose more food than we salvage. Do you want to die alone still inside a puddle of your self-pity? We won’t get any better if we only fend for ourselves. We need a community, a village, a society! Not a monarchy but a family. Like a pride of lions or a gaggle of geese but better. Our town should be warm and welcoming, like a bed. We are a bed of eels; we have our back on the other citizens and if someone attacks one of us, we all sting them back. This may all sound like a fantasy but our dream of a harmonious community could come true because I, Dooby of Norwich am campaigning to become the leader of this island, the leader of the bright future, the leader of the Eels. 

 

Responsibility, reliability, resourcefulness are three words to describe the qualities of my leadership. I have arrived at this island to see you are facing tragic problems and arguments. My belief is that I should be selected as your leader to help make eels island a safe place so you no longer should have to worry. Everybody wants to survive, don’t they? 

Dedication, reliability and courage are what you will expect from me if you expect to see me as your leader. Surely, all of you need someone who will protect you and fight for you. It is imperative that you choose me as your new leader. I promise you that I will be brave my quick and cunning thinking skills will lead us to victory. 

 

  I’m pretty sure it is clear for all of you to see that I have the courage, bravery and  fearlessness to swerve our island away from all danger. I strongly believe, that my bravery is the missing item on this island and will help us in further conditions. I urge you to ask yourself; who was the person who settled the crowd and stopped the angry islanders breaking out in a fury and arguing. It was I.I was the one who stopped all the fights from becoming catastrophic, and ordered you to grab all you could from the boat. For these reasons, I strongly believe that you should select me as your brave, noble leader. 

 

I think that now is the time for me to utilise my strategic thinking skills. I have a voice that is heard all over Eels island and much further. The fact of matter is that people bow their heads down to me whenever I am passing by. They greet me as if I am their strong, noble leader. Why is what many people ask? It is obviously because I care about the fate that we are all in on this island. Without a doubt, I will always stand up for what I believe in and others as well. Despite this, most of you will view me as an ignorant person, but secretly all I want to-do is save and rule Eels island. 

I will make it my mission to discover the strengths, skills and expertness to discover all of these in each and every one of you islanders and make sure that it shows. I will use all of my leadership skills to direct and deploy effectively. Before I arrived on the island misery consumed you, evidence overwhelmingly shows that 1 in 3 islanders were going hungry every day. I hope that you can see that with my careful planning I saved you from that travesty.   If you choose me as your leader I will be there to help you over any hurdle that comes your way. 

For these reasons I will strive to protect you all. Gone are the days of living in fear and hello to the days without fear. I implore that you choose me as your leader.
