One Childhood - One Chance

Year 5 Weekly News - Friday 04/02/2022

English

This week in English, we have read some more of our text – The Firework Maker’s Daughter – and produced two pieces of writing linked to it.

Firstly, the children put themselves into the shoes of Lila, who is now in the cavern of Mount Merapi ready to face Razvani. But, before Lila walks through the fire, we feel she should write a heart-felt letter home to her father to apologise for her wrong-doings and to update him on her journey so far.

For the second piece of writing, the children stepped into the shoes of Hamlet, the elephant! They produced a creative diary entry to tell what Hamlet could have said to convince the King to spare Chulak and Lalchand.

In reading, we looked at authorial intent – the reason why the author chose specific language and punctuation. We finished the week by comparing ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ to our last term’s text ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.

Please make sure children log on to Spelling Shed and read regularly at home. We should be seeing reading records at least 3 times a week!

Maths

This week, we have continued to look at fractions. The children have found equivalent fractions and converted between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Our fractions work will continue into next week.

Please ensure that children are completing the MyMaths homework set and are regularly practising TTRS.

UBBC

Our UBBC lessons this week have been extremely exciting. It all kicked off with our celebration of Chinese New Year on Tuesday. The children learnt about the preparations and traditions of Chinese New Year as well as the importance of the colour red and how the order of the Chinese Zodiac was decided. They made paper lanterns, fortune-tellers and completed word searches.

Then, the children created their own seasonal plates of Chinese food, making sure that they selected foods from their chosen season.

Finally, the week was topped off with four super sessions of cooking today. We invited in Chequers Kitchen who led the sessions superbly. The children each made 3 spring rolls, cooked them and then evaluated what they had made. Hopefully, some of you had the opportunity to taste some too.

Home Learning Information

For the homework this week, we would like the children to design and make their own seasonal dish – making sure they are only using fruits and vegetables that are in season now. They can write their own recipe, explain why they have chosen the ingredients and then cook it and take photos if they are able to. If they are unable to cook their dish, they should just write the recipe and explain the ingredients they have chosen. We are looking forward to seeing what they can make.

Key Messages and Information for Parents

Next week is the last week of Term 3 and school finishes at the normal time of 3:15pm on Friday.

Swimming will be back to the usual day of Tuesday.

As we will be using the field more often at break and lunch times, it is a good idea for the children to have a spare pair of trainers in their lockers to change into to avoid trailing mud through the school.

There will be a Police Community Support Officer in school every day next week delivering talks. Year 5’s will be on Wednesday.

We all hope you have a lovely weekend and thank you for reading!
