One Childhood - One Chance

Year 5 Weekly News - Friday 19th May 2023

We've had another jam packed week this week in Year 5!

Key Messages:

  • On Monday we have the Viking Games! Please come to school in your PE kit.
  • Thursday is swimming for 5B and 5G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why. They will also need to wear their PE kit to school.
  • Reminder to ensure children are reading at home and bringing in their reading records daily.
  • Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes.
  • Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles.
  • Children should bring an extra pair of shoes to change into at break and lunch should they wish to use the field.

Home Learning:

This week, we would like you to create your own rocket out of materials you have at home. Be imaginative and creative - we do have DT day this week after all!

Minimum 3x a week. Reading record must be signed by an adult. Can be completed on your own or with your parents.

Spelling Shed:

Once a week – Friday to Friday.

Tasks will be completed online, with new tasks set every week.

Tasks will always follow the spellings being taught in class that week.

 Times Tables Rock Stars:

Minimum 3x a week.

Can be completed on tablets, laptops or mobile phones though the app or the website.

 My Maths:

Once a week – Friday to Friday.

Tasks will be completed online, with new tasks set every week.

Tasks will always follow the subjects being taught in class that week.

In English this week we continued with our text: Cosmic. In writing, the children wrote a balanced argument about whether Liam, our main character, deserves to go to space using cohesive devices! Next week we will be concluding our book, finding out if Liam ever really made it to space!

This week we learnt about co-ordinates and translating, whilst practising our arithmetic skills. Next week we will be looking at symmetry, before concluding our unit with our end of unit quiz on position and direction.

Thematic Curriculum:

The afternoon curriculum this week looked at lines of longitude and latitude, as well as climate zones and topographical features, forming part of our Geography learning. In addition, the children completed a cross-curricular writing task, completing a biography about the life of Galileo Galilei.

Next week, the children have DT day on Wednesday. They will be creating moon buggies, following the design process to create a vehicle with a power-motored engine!

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday!
