Celebrating UNESCO World Diversity Day at Upton Junior School

Pupils wore outfits expressing the way they viewed themselves

Cultural diversity has been celebrated at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs with children invited to ‘dress to express’ how they view themselves.

The idea was part of the school’s celebration of the annual UNESCO global celebration for cultural diversity for dialogue and development that is held worldwide on May 21.

The successful initiative saw pupils from all age groups wear clothes that reflect who they are – outfits they are comfortable in and which represent their interests, hobbies, beliefs, values and personality.

A variety of outfits were on show including those representing the culture and heritage of families who come from around the world, including Jamaica, India and China.

Izzy Reed, Upton’s Leader of Personal Development, said: “It was wonderful to see how unique and diverse our wonderful pupils are – but also how they unite in our school values of friendship, aspiration, resilience and respect.

“Our diversity day supports our PSHE curriculum topic the children are currently learning called Living in the Wider World, encouraging them to explore the rich diversity of a range of communities.”

Head of School Darci Arthur believes it is important for children and adults to learn about the importance of cultural diversity and harmony.

She said: “Our school is a keen supporter of diversity and this special day was a lovely way for our children to further explore this as well as expressing themselves to our community by the way they like to dress.”

Globally, the May 21 celebration is also aimed at advancing the goals of the UNESCO Convention. They include: – Support sustainable systems of governance for culture; Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals; Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks; Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.
