One Childhood - One Chance

Sharing and Celebrating Culture at Upton

International ties between Upton Juniors and children from schools around the world have again been strengthened.

The latest visitors to receive a warm and friendly welcome were a group of 22 Italian students from Oristano in Sardinia.

During the week-long stay they were partnered with an ‘Upton Buddy’ from Year 5 as they experienced life in an English school first-hand.

They enjoyed observing and taking part in a range of lessons, sharing similar and contrasting experiences of each other’s lives, enjoying games at break time and sharing lunch with their new classmates.

The visit was part of the ongoing Immersion in English programme successfully run in secondary and primary education by Broadstairs English Centre.

Assistant Head of School Ross Kettle said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our children to develop their language and interpersonal skills when being buddies for our visiting students.

“The Sardinian group took part in all lessons with our fantastic buddies integrating them in to school life, helping them with their English and in turn learning some Italian phrases.

“Meanwhile our children developed an understanding of a different culture and had the opportunity to showcase why they love being part of the Upton community.”

Marie Bonore from the visiting group said: “Our children really enjoyed being part of such a special school - they were made so welcome by everyone.”

Earlier in the academic year Upton welcomed 22 Colombian students visiting for three weeks, with Year 6 pupils assuming the buddy roles.

In recent years Upton has also welcomed pupils from China and the Czech Republic.

Head of School Darci Arthur highlighted the positive experience of the initiative. She said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Italian group and for our pupils to explore their culture and heritage.

“Finding out about people their own age from a different country and making friends is such an important life lesson for them all.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Ramsgate Arts Primary and Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate.
