One Childhood - One Chance

Health and Safety Lessons for Life at Upton

The importance of health and safety is the firm focus of children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

Each class learnt about an element of first aid, with some year groups learning about the steps to prevent from choking and breathing problems with asthma to water and road safety.

Pupils read stories about making good lifestyle choices. This included choosing a range of colourful and healthy food in Year 3, identifying hazards in Year 4, making kind and caring comments in Year 5 to making good choices online in Year 6.

The special day was a way to highlight Upton’s ongoing commitment to PSHE – personal, health, social and economic education.

The school’s PSHE Lead Izzy Reed said: “This forms part of our Personal Development curriculum and enables the children to experience and develop crucial life skills that support them in class and beyond.

“It was also wonderful opportunity to focus on talking with each other, as well as sharing thoughts and ideas as a class and as a team.”

Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Each term we have a focus day that embraces our PSHE strategy with different themes. The importance of health and safety affects all areas of our lives on so many varying levels – finding out more about the topic and discussing it with each other broadens our children’s knowledge base as well as developing their oracy skills which is the ability to express oneself fluently and grammatically in speech.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Ramsgate Arts Primary and Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate.
