6Y Music from Around the World

During our music lesson this week we looked at music from around the world. We listened to and responded to music from different cultures. For our task, we created a fact file about our favourite type of music and where it comes from. This is a great link to our topic The World Around Us and really incorporates cultural diversity.

DID YOU KNOW:

Jamaica - The Caribbean has a wealth of music styles and one of the most well-known of these is reggae, which originally comes from Jamaica.Reggae music has its origins in ska, calypso and rhythm and blues. Features of reggae include:

•A syncopated beat, with the emphasis on beats 2 and 4

•The use of electric guitar, bass guitar  and drums

India: There are many different styles of Indian music, including classical and a dance music called bhangra.Indian music isn’t written down using musical notation but patterns of notes called raga are learnt off by heart. The melody is often accompanied by drones, which are long, sustained notes. Traditional Indian instruments include sitars, dhols (two-headed drums worn on a strap) and bansuri (a bamboo flute).

New Zealand: Māori are people native to New Zealand. Traditional Māori instruments are called ‘taonga pūoro’ and include wooden  flutes, trumpets made from shells or wood and porotiti - discs on cords that make a humming sound when they are spun. Some flutes are played by the musician blowing into the instrument with their nose. Melodies of songs often consist of notes very close to  each other. Chanting is also a key part of many songs.

We looked at lots of other countries too. Take a look at our work.
