One Childhood - One Chance

6P - Working to stop Climate Change

It is widely known that President Trump does not believe in climate change and has actively worked to prevent America reducing its impact on the environment. Here in 6P we think he is wrong and have, this week, written persuasive letters to him in an attempt to change his mind about the severity of the situation. Here are some of our letters, they are good enough to convince anyone!

Dear President Trump,

I am Writing to inform you of the dangers of climate change and how this it is very real and is ever so slowly destroying the planet. Since you are a leader and have a lot of power, I am writing this letter directly to YOU.

Areas around the world like the Amazon Rainforest are in grave danger because of climate change. Rainforests all around the world (including America) supply 40% of the world's oxygen and without them humans would die. The rising heat of the planet is causing animals to die (the Polar Bear being the one most in danger). Worst of all, these Rainforests are the homes of thousands and thousands of animals and are watching their homes being destroyed by the greed of humans. When you refused to sign The Paris Climate Change Agreement it was like stabbing the heart of America and the rest of the globe, is that what you really want? This does not mean you cannot change; you can save the lives of millions of millions of animas and save your own life by not cutting down as many trees, and signing that agreement with Paris. To extend my desperation of you to change, I would like to inform you that 97% of climate change is caused by humans.

Average sea levels have swelled over 8 inches (about 23 cm) since 1880, this means that eventually hundreds of people will be homeless and some may even die. In addition to this, eventually America, your own country, will be flooded and will no longer exist. The reason behind the sea levels rising is because the solar ice caps are melting, making water, and then that water goes to the sea therefore making it rise. Flat countries like Holland and The Maldives will quickly be flooded and will be wiped from existence. Not caring or believing in climate change is destroying the planet and only a monster would want that so again, please sign that deal with Paris because if you do that, you are a hero and you are saving the planet.

The greenhouse effect is a warming of Earth's surface and the air above it, without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life to exist. I know this sounds like a good thing, but because of human activity (driving cars and other modes of transport) it is causing the greenhouse effect to heat up even more. It causes climate change by trapping heat from the sun and then shines that heat down onto Earth. This is a natural warming process but as I said before human activity is heating up that sunlight that shines down on Earth (and that sunlight is extremely hot anyway).

In conclusion, I really hope that you do sign that agreement with Paris because with one signature YOU, could help save the planet yet you decide that you want the planet to die and want the rest of your family sons and daughters to live in a world where tigers do not exist, the Amazon Rainforest is a pile of ash and rubble, and it was all their great grandfather Donald's fault. Once again this does not mean you cannot change - SIGN THAT DEAL and you could be a hero!

Yours faithfully

Rufus

Dear President Trump,

It has come to my attention that you do not believe in global warming. My name is Joshua and I am writing to you to convince you otherwise. I am certain the following facts that I am about to show you are enough to prove you wrong. We need to solve this now by coming together to prevent further damage.

Firstly, I would like to start with extreme weather conditions. In America between November 25th 2010 and October 31st 2011, the Texas wild fire season burnt 4,011,709 acres of land. This happened because the hot, dry conditions created by the increase in the planet's temperatures causes wildfires. Secondly, I would like to mention flooding. Heat is a form of energy and when there’s more energy there’s more erratic floods. In 1993 the Mississippi River flooded which lasted from May to October and caused 15 billion dollars in damages and killed 50 people. This was a sign that something was not right and it’s your duty now as president to correct this. My last point on weather conditions includes heatwaves. Because the planet is constantly warming heatwaves are becoming more regualar. The 2018 North American heatwave in Canada saw 70 deaths and affected 18 states with temperatures reaching a deathly 47.2 degrees.

My other concern is the effect of Greenhouse gases. Air pollution releases excessive amounts of harmful gases into the atmosphere. Pakistan has the highest level of air pollution and causes worsened asthma and premature deaths due to lung and heart diseases. This should not be happening. Because of the warmer temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, extreme weather conditions, reduction in water availability and agricultural productivity the world’s food supply is at serious risk.

To continue more solar energy is being absorbed at the surface and the oceans temperature rise which causes the ice to melt. This problem affects polar bears as they won’t be able to find food or look after their babies. The sea is becoming more acidic making it damaging to sealife. We are at an enormous risk of losing our homes because they will be under water. They will be at risk of collapsing too.

I hope I have given you enough evidence to persuade you to believe that global warming is real. What else can these distasters be blamed on? Something needs to be done and it needs to be done quickly. I know you are a busy man but our world needs fixing. With the power you have will you help us? Will you help us fix it?

Joshua B

Dear President Trump,

I am writing to you over my concerns about climate change. I believe you need to change your opinions based on the fact that climate change is real! Because greenhouse gasses are like a giant blanket that has been wrapped around the world, our planet is suffocating. Fossil fuels are the biggest culprits to the increase of Greenhouse gasses, something that can be replaced with renewable energies like, solar, wind and geothermal.

Also, climate change has massive, negative effects on everything in this world. Greenhouse gases are causing the earth's temperature to rise. Areas are becoming drier causing many of the world’s crops to dry out, which is causing many people to die of starvation from poor harvests. There are also massive forest fires occurring around the globe which kills oxygen-producing trees and wildlife. There are also low lying and coastal areas, which are impacted by floods. Because of the rise in temperature, the polar icecaps are melting causing rising sea levels of 3.6mm per year. This results in bigger floods and more frequent and larger hurricanes and natural disasters.

This earth is dying!

Mr Trump, you should be the one setting the example but I think it is quite the opposite way around. The younger generation are the ones who are truly setting they example especially for older adults like you! Do you care for the future of this world or do you just care about being in power?

Mr Trump, I believe that you can put a stop to climate change. You must stop drilling into the ground on the hunt for oil and you need to believe that climate change is real. You must also protect the endangered species from those who are destroying their habitats or this world will continue to suffer. I beg that you take back the executive orders that erased protections in these areas for America. We must cut down on the power plants, fossil fuels, greenhouse gasses, they all destroy this world. Please help the environment, I beg of you!  If you need inspiration I suggest to listen to activist Greta Thunberg, she speaks for so many of us who see the reality of the dire situation ahead.

Sincerely,

Zachary
