06.06.25 Year 3 Weekly News

Welcome back to Term 6!
We hope families have all had a wonderful half-term break and have spent quality time, doing the things you enjoy. Can you believe, it’s the final term of the school year!
Personal Development
This week in PSHE, our focus has been Living in the Wider World, with a special emphasis on Living in a Diverse Community. Year 3 children have been exploring what it means to be part of a global community, celebrating our differences, and understanding the shared values that connect us all.
As part of our learning, we also looked at how the environment impacts communities across the world. Children were encouraged to think critically about the effects of climate change and how it influences people's daily lives, homes, and access to resources. Each year group spent a dedicated morning focusing on a specific continent, learning about the ways in which climate change has affected communities. Linking to our Thematic learning, Year 3 explored South America, with a specific focus on the Amazon Rainforest. The children engaged in thoughtful discussions and activities that helped them build empathy, awareness, and a stronger sense of global responsibility.
It has been a powerful and eye-opening week, and we’re incredibly proud of the curiosity and compassion Year 3 have shown throughout. We look forward to building on this learning as we continue to explore the wider world around us.
Maths
This week in Maths, Year 3 have started an exciting new topic: Measurement and we’ve jumped straight in by exploring mass! The children have been getting hands-on with a variety of practical activities, using scales to measure and compare the mass of different objects. They've been learning to read grams and kilograms accurately, estimate weights, and understand the difference between heavier and lighter items. It’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and curiosity as children worked in pairs and small groups, developing both their mathematical reasoning and teamwork skills. Real-world maths like this helps children understand how measurement plays an important role in everyday life.
Next week, we will be moving onto exploring capacity and volume.
English
This week in English, Year 3 have been exploring explanation texts — all linked to our exciting thematic topic, Rainforests Revealed. Inspired by the style and structure of National Geographic articles, the children have been busy writing their own explanation texts, focusing on the complexities of the Amazon Rainforest as a living ecosystem. Children have explored key features of explanation writing, including clear headings, logical structure, technical vocabulary, and cause-and-effect language. We’ve been incredibly impressed by the way pupils have embraced the challenge — using subject-specific language confidently and structuring their writing to inform and
It’s been a brilliant opportunity to combine writing skills with our learning in Geography and Science, and we’re looking forward to seeing the children publish and present their final pieces.
Next week in English, we’ll be moving onto our core text: Charlotte’s Web and will be writing a recount from the perspective of a character.
Reading
This week, children have taken their Star Reader Assessment and from Monday, will be issued with their adjusted ZPD code, which will be stuck into their reading records. With this in mind, please could we ask that all children bring their reading records into school on Monday. Children are reminded to bring their reading records in, when they have read- we expect children to read at least, three times a week.
