The week began with our PD day, focusing on puberty. Please see Miss Reed’s blog post for more information.
English
This week, the children started their new text ‘When the Mountains Roared.’ They read the blurb and prologue and made predictions about the text. After reading the first chapter, they wrote a diary entry in the role of the main character. Their focus was to use emotive language to portray how Ruby feels after finding out she is leaving for India. Next week, the children will be continuing the book and writing a setting description of the Himalayan mountains and hotel Ruby has moved to.
Maths
This week, the children have finished up the unit on decimals by learning how to multiply decimals. We taught them how to use short multiplication, rounding and adjusting and grid method. Next week, the children are starting the shape unit. They will focus on properties of quadrilaterals and triangles.
Thematic
This week, the children have been focusing on puberty, the environment and charities. The children discussed how to react in a range of situations and how to acknowledge diversity and community. Next week, we will be continuing our learning linked to the geography and history of Broadstairs and Ramsgate.
STEAM event
Wednesday saw the first two classes head off to Chatham and Clarendon for the STEAM event. The children were able to create metal keychains, have a go at screen printing, bake apple rock cakes, hunt for gold in the science lab and carry out maths investigations. The children had such a fantastic day!
Chicks
On Tuesday, year 5 had 8 chicks arrive. I am pleased to announce that we have 8 chicks, and they are doing very well. This links to our science learning from term 1, where we focused on the life cycles of animals. The children are loving watching them grow!

Homework
- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
- All children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
