13.06.25 Year 3 Weekly News

Another busy week in Year 3!
Thematic
This week in Thematic, we kicked off an exciting new topic: Rainforests Revealed. Our learning journey began with an exploration of the incredible diversity of biomes around the world. From the icy tundras to the scorching deserts, lush rainforests to vast grasslands; we dived deep into the unique climates, plants, and animals that make each biome so special. To bring our learning to life, we each created our own biome diorama that captured the essence of a chosen biome. Using a mix of materials, imagination, and facts, our dioramas showcased landscapes, vegetation, and wildlife.
Alongside each diorama, we included a detailed information card, explaining key features such as: climate, temperature, plants and animals- we also listed interesting facts that make the biome unique. It was amazing to see how creative and informative each project turned out to be. Not only did we learn about biomes, but we also practiced research skills, artistic expression, and teamwork.
Next week, as part of our Science learning, we will be finding out about plants and what they need to grow and thrive.
English
This week in English, the children have been writing diary recounts, stepping into the shoes of characters from our core text: Charlotte's Web. Using their imaginations and their understanding of the story, children wrote heartfelt and creative diary entries from the perspective of key characters such as Wilbur and Fern. They explored how these characters might feel during important moments in the story, using emotive language and first-person narration to bring their thoughts and feelings to life on the page. It was wonderful to see how well the children captured the voice and personality of each character.
Coming up next week, we’ll be building on this work by moving into informal letter writing. The children will be learning how to recount an event through a letter, again linking to the characters and events in Charlotte's Web. They'll be focusing on tone, structure, and how to write with a personal and authentic voice.
Maths
This week in Maths, the children have been busy developing their understanding of capacity and volume through fun, practical activities. Using a range of measuring jugs, containers, and everyday items, they explored how to measure, compare, and estimate different volumes. From filling and pouring to reading scales and recording measurements, the classroom was full of active, hands-on learning. These practical experiences helped to deepen the children’s understanding of units of measurement, as well as the real-life importance of accurate measuring.
It was fantastic to see the children so engaged as they worked together to investigate which containers held more, how to estimate volumes, and how to measure with precision.
Next week, we’ll be applying this knowledge to problem solving involving measure. The children will explore different strategies to tackle real-world problems, developing their reasoning and thinking skills as they apply what they’ve learnt in new and exciting ways.
Home Learning
Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish.
