04.07.25 Year 3 Weekly News

It's been a busy week in Year 3!
Thematic
This week in Thematic, we’ve journeyed deep into the heart of the rainforest, in our Rainforest WOW Day. It was packed with exciting, hands-on experiences that brought the sights, sounds, and creatures of the jungle to life. The children kicked off the day by exploring their creativity through rainforest-inspired artwork. Using vibrant colours and natural textures, they painted scenes bursting with exotic plants and animals.
Next, we had an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with real rainforest creatures. The children were thrilled (and a little nervous!) to handle and learn about a lizard, a snake, and even a tree frog. The workshop was a fantastic way to explore the rich biodiversity of the rainforest and sparked lots of curious questions.
Inspired by the rainforest environment, the children created their very own mini-ecosystems by building terrariums. Carefully layering soil, moss, and plants, they constructed little green worlds to take home and observe. It was a fun and meaningful way to learn about rainforest habitats and how ecosystems thrive.
To finish the day, the children used clay to sculpt their favourite rainforest animals. From sloths to parrots, each model was unique and full of character. This activity helped reinforce what they had learnt about animal features and rainforest life while letting their imaginations run wild.
Our Rainforest WOW Day was a huge success—full of creativity, discovery, and a real sense of wonder. The children had an amazing time and came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rainforest and the incredible life it holds.
Next week, we will be moving onto our RE topic for the term, where the children will be learning about Sikhism.
English
This week in English, our Year3 writers have been hard at work crafting the next chapters of their exciting animal escape stories. With imagination in full swing, they’ve been bringing their characters and adventures to life through vivid descriptions, action-packed plots, and well-developed settings. A key focus this week has been on the revision and editing process. The children have taken time to read through their stories carefully, making thoughtful changes to improve their work. Whether it was adding more detail to a setting, strengthening a character’s voice, or tightening up the plot, they’ve shown great perseverance and pride in polishing their writing.
Next week, we’ll be shifting gears slightly and diving into the wonderful world of poetry. The children will explore rhythm, rhyme, and wordplay as they begin to craft poems of their own. We can’t wait to see where their creativity takes them next!
Maths
This week in Maths, the children have been putting their number knowledge to the test as we explored mental strategies for addition and subtraction. With a strong focus on thinking flexibly and choosing efficient methods, children have been developing their confidence and speed with mental calculations. To deepen their understanding, the children took part in open-ended investigations that challenged them to apply everything they’ve learnt about number this year. These tasks encouraged them to think critically, work systematically, and explain their reasoning clearly.
Next week, we will be moving onto exploring multiplication and division.
Home Learning
Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish.
