Term 1: Make Some Noise
This term in Year 4 we are learning about Sound. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term. We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.
English:
This week in English, we continued to read our text ‘Gregory Cool’. The children wrote an information text about Tobago using different organisational features such as subject-specific vocabulary and subheadings. The reports included information about the weather, geography, places of interest and food. The children also used drama to act out parts of the text to understand the characters’ personalities in more depth.
Next week we will conclude reading Gregory Cool and write a comparative setting description of Tobago and Broadstairs.
Maths:
In maths this week we began our first Ark unit on place value. The children learnt to partition and order & compare 4-digit numbers, and found 10, 100 and 1000 more or less than a given number. They used Dienes, place value counters and arrow cards to assist with their independent work.
Next week we will be rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week we began our new topic ‘Make Some Noise’. We began our sessions with a sound hunt around the school and used the sounds we heard to write a collective poem based on Roger McGough’s ‘The Sound Collector’.
Next, we investigated how sounds are produced and experimented with vibrations. The children observed the effect of vibrations on rice when placed on a drum and watched as they danced around when the drums were hit. They watched the ripples in the water when a tuning fork was placed on the surface and felt the vibrations through balloons when they were held on speakers. Finally, the children created guitars out of different sized boxes and elastic bands and listened to the different pitches when the bands were plucked.
We finished the week by looking at soundwaves and how they change when the volume and/or pitch changes. The children drew what they thought a piece of music looked like and listened to what different pitches sounded like.
Next week we will continue to look at how we hear sound, and we will conduct simple experiments to investigate how soundwaves react to different factors.
