One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 26.09.25

This Week in Year 6...

English

This week, the children have delved deeper into Floodland, stepping into the shoes of the questionable protagonist, Dooby. They crafted persuasive speeches aimed at the inhabitants of Eels Island, portraying Dooby as a strong and capable leader. Through effective clause structures and persuasive language, they highlighted the strengths of his leadership.
Next week, we’ll follow the journey of two key characters as they escape Eels Island in search of Zoe’s parents. Thursday also marks National Poetry Day, where the children will spend time exploring and responding to a unique poem.

Maths

In Maths, we’ve been strengthening our understanding of known facts such as multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and applying them to solve balanced equations. The children have also tackled problems involving factors and multiples, using bar models to support their problem-solving strategies.
Next week, we’ll be mastering tricky multiplication and long division – a great opportunity to build resilience and confidence with more complex calculations.

Thematic Curriculum

Following last week’s exploration of Charles Darwin’s voyage aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, the children have begun investigating the theories Darwin developed during his five-year journey. These theories are helping them build classification skills, identifying characteristics of animals and plants – including whether plants are vascular or non-vascular.

Term 1 Art Competition

This term’s Art Competition is inspired by Henri Rousseau and his iconic jungle paintings. Rousseau’s dreamlike scenes, filled with exotic plants and wild animals, captured his imagination – and now it’s your turn!

Your challenge: Create a piece of art in any medium (painting, drawing, digital art, collage, or mixed media) that brings a dream you’ve had to life.
Whether your dream takes place in a jungle, under the sea, or on another planet, we can’t wait to see your creativity shine!

Deadline: End of Term 1
Submit to: Mr Mason
Selected works will be featured in a special exhibition in Term 2.
