Year 6 Weekly News – 03.10.25
This Week in Year 6...
English
Yesterday was National Poetry Day, and the children explored the theme of play through poetry—discovering how wordplay can create vivid imagery and spark imagination. In their narrative writing, they’ve been developing the skill of interweaving action and dialogue, rewriting a dramatic scene from Floodlands—the battle of Eel Island. Next week, we’ll finish the book and the children will write a newspaper report based on its final events.
Maths
This week, we’ve been mastering tricky multiplication and long division. The children applied their skills to a variety of problems, showing fantastic mathematical thinking and perseverance. Their ability to reason and solve challenges has been impressive!
Thematic Curriculum – Science
Our focus this term is Biology. Last week, we learned how to classify organisms by their characteristics. This week, the children became Charles Darwin’s apprentices, exploring the school grounds to investigate the living things in our environment. Working in groups, they planned and carried out investigations using key scientific skills: asking questions, observing, measuring, and presenting data.
Term 1 Art Competition
Inspired by Henri Rousseau and his iconic jungle paintings, this term’s art competition invites children to bring a dream to life through art.
Your challenge:
Create a piece of art in any medium—painting, drawing, digital art, collage, or mixed media—that illustrates a dream you’ve had. Whether it takes place in a jungle, under the sea, or on another planet, we can’t wait to see your creativity shine!

- Selected works will be featured in a special exhibition in Term 2.
