One Childhood - One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News - Friday 28.11.25

We have had a fabulous week in Year 4 this week. Take a look at what we have been up to…

Key Messages for next week…

Wednesday 3rd – Open Day for current Year 2 children.

Friday 5th – Pantomime at Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. Children can bring a snack and a drink (no fizzy) to consume at the theatre. See separate email for all details. Please note: we will return later than the usual school day – approximately 5:00-5:30pm

  • Tuesday is swimming for 4R and 4Y. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why. Children MUST have a swim cap and earrings removed.
  • Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
  • Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
  • Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.
  • Wellies are needed so that the children can access the field during break and lunch times.

Christmas Fair:

It is that time of the year when we are thinking about the Christmas Fair and being ready for Friday 12th December. In Year 4, the children run their own stalls. We ask that they work in groups of about 6-8 and run the stall together. They will need to provide everything they need for the stall based on what they have chosen to do, including games, items to sell, a float for change, prizes, etc. All money collected during the fair will go to the school.

Weekly homework tasks:

Reading daily – please bring in your reading record signed by an adult.

TTRS - at least 3 times a week for 10 minutes.

Mathletics – Friday to Friday

Spelling – Please choose approximately 5 words from the Year 3/4 word list to complete ‘look, say, cover, write, check’. This should be completed in the orange Home Learning book and returned to school to be checked by the class teacher.

AR Quizzes – complete on Accelerated Reader once book has been completed. This can be done at home or at school.

Please note, Mathletics has a different login to AR and TTRS.

***Well done to everyone who has received a certificate so far for either Mathletics or TTRS***

Term 2: Walk Like an Egyptian

This term in Year 4 we are learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term. We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.

English:

This week in English, we wrote a dialogue based on our Marcy book. The conversation was between Marcy and Thoth trying to understand why he wanted Ra’s moon eye. We focused on using correct punctuation for speech as well as incorporating action and synonyms for said.

Next week we will read a new book: The Egyptian Cinderella, and will write a diary from the point of view of the main character, Rhodopis.

Maths:

In maths this week, we continued to look at graphs. We read, interpreted and compared bar charts as well as drew our own based on given data. We also explored what time graphs are ready to draw our own next week.

Next week we will draw a time graph and look at graphs with two sets of data plotted on them.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we explored digestion and carried out an experiment to see how the intestines work. We also learnt about food chains and the role each plant or animal plays.

We also had our Egyptian Wow Day, where the children dressed up as something related to Egypt and took part in a range of activities. Across the day, the children made a headdress fit for a pharaoh, created a clay cartouche, built a 3D pyramid, uncovered Tutankhamun’s tomb through drama and played Egyptian Top Trumps with their handmade cards. We had a fabulous day!
