One Childhood - One Chance

12.12.25 Year 3 Weekly News

What a week!

Thematic

This week in our Thematic learning, we moved into our DT learning, and the children have been busy creating their very own shadow puppets. Using their knowledge of shadows and light from our recent science lessons, they explored how to make their puppets come to life by adding linkages to create movement.

The children followed the full design process:

  • Planning their ideas

  • Designing their puppets

  • Making them with care and creativity

  • Evaluating their finished products

They also created a project book to showcase each step of their learning, demonstrating their understanding and reflecting on what they might improve next time. It has been a hands-on, imaginative and engaging week, and the children should be very proud of their hard work.

Next week, we will be moving on to our RE learning, where a new area of study awaits!

Maths

In maths this week, the children have been busy exploring length. They’ve been practising how to measure and draw lines accurately, using rulers; they’ve also enjoyed comparing different lengths found around the classroom and outdoor spaces. They have shown great enthusiasm while working practically, discussing their findings, and using mathematical vocabulary such as longer, shorter, taller, centimetres, and millimetres.

Next week, we will be moving on to solving problems involving length, where the children will apply their measuring skills to real-life challenges and reasoning tasks. We’re looking forward to seeing how they use what they’ve learnt in more complex contexts!

English

This week in Year 3, we’ve been busy cooking up something very exciting — our own restaurant menus and a persuasive recipe designed especially for Iron Man! The children were challenged to design dishes that included metal elements, making them imaginative meals perfectly suited for the Iron Man. Our focus has been on using descriptive vocabulary, particularly expanded noun phrases, to make our dishes sound irresistible. The children explored how powerful adjectives can transform a simple dish into something spectacular.

It’s been a fantastic week filled with creativity, language skills, and plenty of fun. We’re incredibly proud of the deliciously descriptive work Year 3 has produced!

Christmas Fair

A heartfelt thank you to all the parents and families for your generous donations and incredible support for the Year 3 stalls. Your contributions played a huge part in making this event a resounding success!

The children had an amazing time planning, organising, and running their own class stalls. From creating their own banners and posters, to managing their stations with enthusiasm- they learnt valuable lessons about teamwork, responsibility, and communication—all while having plenty of fun!

It was truly wonderful to see so many of you come out to support the school-your presence and encouragement made the afternoon even more special for the children.

Once again, thank you for your generosity and support. Events like these remind us of the strong and supportive community we have here at our school. We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to come together!

Home Learning

Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Children have been given a Home Learning book to complete their Home Learning tasks in- children will be bringing their Home Learning books home on Monday.

Home Learning is due in on Thursday 18th December 2025

Reading Records

With AR Assessments complete, children will be given a new ZPD, which you will find in their Reading Record: ‘Term 2’ ZPD sticker. If children have not yet brought in their reading record to school, they need to make sure they bring it in on Monday 3rd November, so that we can issue children with a new reading book. Please ensure children are reading every night and are likewise taking quizzes. Your child can access the quizzes here: Renaissance Learning Login

Spellings

Children will have a spelling sheet attached in their home learning book. Each week, they will need to practise the core spellings listed using the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ strategy. Within your child’s home learning book, there are prompts and tips to support children in learning their spellings, along with a spelling list and an example of a table, which children can draw themselves, each time they learn a new set of spellings. Children should choose five spellings to practise at home each week. Please do speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
